OK.
So I have a ton of DVD movies that I would like to banish to the goodwill or _________?
But before I do, I would like to put them on a hard disk drive, external.

Something like this.

http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Studio-FireWire-External/dp/B004QGXOP2/ref=pd_sim_pc_6

I would then like to share this on my home network so I can view it on any device, including home TV.

Has anyone done this?
What software do you recommend for movie transfer to HDD?
What external drive?

I use mac at home, 2 mac pros, ipad, Sony Bravia with wifi that's tethered to network for faster response.

handbrake or mac the ripper for ripping/transcoding.

iirc, your ipad is going to be limited to quicktime-supported codecs and your tv will probably have some codec limitations, as well. find the ones that are supported on both.

fwiw, i personally wouldn't trust my entire media collection to a single drive.

Mac the ripper looks good.
Will purchase that.

Going to order the hard drive and then start ripping.

Checked into the video tv file format for playback. I think you're right, couldn't find an option on the settings menu to read/play files from a pc.

Any thoughts on Apple TV?
That seems to be a solution to the problem of playback.

Downloaded mac the ripper pro over the weekend. It works great! Thanks for the suggestion Derby.

I may try the time capsule and Apple TV to make this work. I'll post up my results and review when I get all devices up and going.
