To Snorkel or Not to Snorkel (Honda Hawk 650GT)

So, I'm cleaning the carbs on my wife's Hawk 650GT.  I'm putting things together and wondering how to make it breathe better.  It's got a K&N air filter, a full SuperTrapp exhaust, but it is tuned a little rich.  I was thinking removing the snorkel might let a little more air in, especially at higher RPMs.  The intake is protected by the tank, so the snorkel does little in protecting foreign objects from getting sucked up.

Here's a pic of the airbox lid:

It does look like there'd be a bit more air coming in without the snorkel.

Which way does the snorkel face?  Got a photo of the lid installed?

Reaches forward and the opening is downward behind the frame spar:

As it is a Honda, the input of the snorkle is probably located in a high pressure area. I would be a little cautious about making a non-revesable change there!

It's not non-reversible at all, it pops out just like the snorkels in the Monster airboxes.

I share the shop with a longtime Honda Hawk guy.

He said try it without the cover.

I'll give it a shot!  It's quick to get the tank off for experimenting with the cover/snorkel combos.

Thanks!

As a long time Hawk GT owner, I say dump the airbox, and install filter pods, and a rejet for maximum intake road, and quite a few more ponies.

If it wasn't to be sold shortly, I would totally go the pod route!
