Nice thread topic.

Damn, I love to drink but it's going to kill me. I have major underlying health problems (liver...) and my constant, casual, "I don't go to bars" drink at home life style is having a HUGE crisis on my health... to say nothing of my loving wife's sanity.

For my Mother's Day gift to my wife I spent a week in a lock down, hospital de-tox unit. If you have ever seen seen "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" I was the one living out Jack Nicholson's role! I had no idea it was on the pysch ward floor. Crazy mother f##kers in every room! Just me and a couple of others were there for de-tox vs. booze and drugs. No drugs for me. The rest were crazier than a March hare. Geee... what fun that was!

Finally made my escape and got discharged. Thank God!!

Have stumped my toe a few times since then but I am now in a GREAT IOP (intensvie outpatient program)! Wonderful group of people, not 10 minutes from my home, three nights a week. Great mixed group of folks. Some drug and but mostly alcoholic addicts. I love and look forward to going every chance I get.

My wife's birthday was yesterday and I asked her what she might want. All she said was she wanted me to go to my meeting... that's the present she wanted. I did but we will go out to dinner tonight to celebrate her b-day. Minus the drinks. [thumbsup]

Way to go brother! Proud of you. If you can't stop with known health issues, you've got a problem. Way to face it!
I've friends lose everything to "just alcohol," so I feel really strongly about it.

I have always found not having a drink is easy.  Not having six once I have had one?  Now that's a problem.....  Good luck on your quest to stay off the evil crap.  [bow_down]

problem solved.  I have a little deal worked out with my wife that every time i go a month without alcohol (weekdays only) i get "the thing married women dont do " it kinda rhymes with PJ.  It works for me  most of the time

Wait... so as part of the deal you still get to consume alcohol on weekends

Gratuitous picture of beer with head.

I thought that is why all brides walking down the aisle had smiles on their faces... they would never have to do "that" again! ;) [bacon] [beer]

Same here.  Lives completely destroyed and wasted in some cases by "just beer."

That's awesome, all of you!   [clap]

In the past, when I've had jobs that lent to having expendable time, I had to take a break from drinking every so often.

The last 2 or 3 years though, it seems like work as consumed all of my time.  I've been averaging probably 3 drinks a week.

Never a bad thing to take an occasional break from ANY drug. I say go for it, and good luck to you. I do the same often enough.

I should take a break from insulin??

:P

I gave up alcohol. Was the longest 15 minutes of my life...my LIFE! Is this thing on? *thump thump thump*

But seriously, found myself with a fridge full of beer and absolutely no desire to drink it.
A cabinet full of fantastic whiskeys...not a drop one.

I go through spurts. I will have months at a time where having a single beer is very unusual for me. But then I will have months were almost every night after work involves a beer or a couple of fingers neat.

I never drink to the point of intoxication anymore. It just does nothing for me. I even tried to on Friday night at a birthday party but 3 beers in, I caught myself admiring the flavors and tried analyzing.

[laugh] [laugh] [laugh] Had to laugh at that one!

Had lunch last week with a life long friend who gave me the "I don't need to drink. I can go for days and not even think about it!" bullshit. And this is the guy that should have about 20 DWI arrests (somehow he doesn't!!) and at our dove hunts is so shit faced drunk at 9:30 in the morning we have had to hide all of his guns and not let him hunt with us... plus assign a watch dog to ride herd on him. [roll] I love that... the pot calling the kettle black and taking some BS high road. At least I have the sense to not drive after drinking (he doesn't) and I damn sure dont hunt or shoot after serious drinking. Maybe a cold beer.. that's it.

It's a tough haul but I am worth it and so is my family. Spare livers are hard to come by. ;)

That's a sweet deal!  [laugh] [thumbsup]

I don't drink Sun.-Thurs. anyway unless I'm on vacation. I always have to work the next day and drinking makes me sleep like crap.  :'(

This is me.  I'm that country son "The More I Drink."

That said I do plan on staying dry for most of the month.  Not gonna give it up on the cruise though.

Things I learned during my abstinence:

It wasn't as easy as I imagined.  I did what I set out to do, but there were a couple of times when I wanted a drink more than I really like to admit.

On Sunday evening's I like to cook.  A bottle of wine is always involved in that activity... one glass for the pot... most of the rest of the bottle for me  [laugh].  So it was this cooking routine which really brought home my..... attachment.  I didn't enjoy the cooking nearly so much :-\.

On the flip side, there were a couple of June weekend mornings when I woke up feeling like crap..... if I had been drinking the night prior I woulda blamed that.  Turns out sometimes you just wake up feeling like crap.

Anyway, I did prove to myself that I can go without, so FWIW I'm happy with that.
