Wife and I are doing a cycling tour in Austria this coming week. No motos, but pedaling is the next best thing for us.

Anyone familiar with the area that can offer any recommendations? Never been before. We're starting in Salzburg and making a loop via Attersee, Traunsee, Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, Gollingertorgasse and back. About 400 miles in 7 days.  We'll have a few extra days in Salzburg where we may rent a car or take other bike rides or hikes, depending.

I doubt we'll have a shortage of things to do/see, but I always welcome suggestions.

I was going to suggest Innsbruck but doesn't sound like you're heading that way.

We have a couple of days in Salzburg. Innsbruck is only 2 hours by train, so definitely an option.

Just found a moto rental and ride from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden that looks very tempting. Wife doesn't ride, though

Berchtesgaden; salt mine tour, Jennerbahn cable car, Königsee boatride (take the walk up to Obersee)

We spent 2 days in Berchtesgaden during last summers ED, gorgeous area. You can always rent a car for a day or two. (make sure it has a current vignette, [toll sticker] the fines are steep if you get caught on the Autobahn without one)

I would also strongly recommend Innsbruck, especially if you're outdoorsy.

Tons of hiking, easy to technical; paragliding, etc.

It's a beautiful town.

It was self-guided and well organized, although we wouldn't have necessarily picked the same roads.

Austria has a wonderful bike system; lanes through all the towns and highways and bicycles are well respected on the road. Many folks commute everywhere (70+ year old men and women will hand you your hat on their 30 pound commuters). There is also a huge network of well marked cycle paths (smaller roads with very few cars) throughout the countryside. The landscape is beautiful and people are quite nice and very polite. Almost everyone speaks English, many fluently. Great place to travel. Feel free to send a PM if you want any details. We also did a self-guided trip in the Tuscany area of Italy with a company called Iron Donkey. They were very good, as well.

Thanks to all for the travel tips. I ended up with a virus right before we left, then topped it off with a mild case of food poisoning shortly after we arrived. The first week was a little brutal so we didn't venture too far. After looping back to Salzburg we spent the last two days off-bike mostly walking/hiking around Salzburg --plenty to do and see. Innsbruck, Tyrolia, and Berchtesgaden are on the list for next time...
