Good story. Bezos is an interesting guy for sure.

He's involved in a lot of unique projects as well (easy to do when you're worth $25B). Here's one that I know a little about...my company is doing the rock mechanics for it:

He said the other night the FAA approval will be in 15. Less than 10mi from one of their distribution centers with delivery times as soon as 30min.

The big issue I see is theft & weather. The rest can be handled for specific applications.

Who knows how they really plan to use it though...or if they even do. It might have been a big hoax to throw everyone off.

Theft wouldn't be any greater than it is now.  It is a lot harder to track and follow a small flying object that doesn't follow roads than a big ass brown truck that does.  It might actually be less as some of those big ass brown truck drivers are prone to "lose" packages.

Personally I can't wait!  I am gonna run along under one until it fails and falls on my head.  Then I am gonna sue the pants off of Amazon.  (Okay I don't sue people) However it is a point overlooked.  Anything mechanical will fail and fall when it flies.

With today's interest in Drones it ain't gonna be safe to stand outside any longer.....

I will have to agree with Kopf, Nice thought but ain't gonna happen.  Hell some people freak when I fly a balloon 1000ft. over their homes, wait till drones start falling out of the sky.......

Feel free to PM me if needed, otherwise you will find me elsewhere.

I doubt that has been overlooked. No one has mentioned it here, but I guarantee that Amazon has thought of it and likely has an estimated failure rate. I do agree that it's a serious consideration.

It was a nice publicity bump for Amazon. On 60 Minutes the day before cyber Monday?  [thumbsup]
