Tank removal question

A buddy who does custom paint work is going to fix my tank from the low side. He's cutting me an amazing price on patching it up, spraying the black and then clear coating the ENTIRE tank and seat so that it has more than the lame microscopic layer the factory puts on. Seriously, if you guys need paint work, lemme know.

Removing the tank seems pretty basic, but I wanted to know if there were any tricks/watchouts I should know about.

It would seem that one would simply unbolt the sucker, flip it over as much as possible, unhook the lines, attempt to drain what fuel you can from the lines into a receptical then flip the tank back over and drain that fuel into said receptical. But surely it can't be THAT easy.

Ask Hiero... Hiero knows everything [thumbsup]

Don't the SCs have quick release thingy's on the gas lines?

Here's a hint- Ride around for 20 miles AFTER the little yellow light comes on [moto]

If they do that'd be nice. Wouldn't have to drain the ilnes.

I was planning on riding it around until it was nearly out, but the rib kinda disagrees with that idea.

I'll ride it until it's empty [thumbsup]

Mighty selfless of you.

BTW, do you remember seeing quick releases on there when we lifted it? I don't remember either way.

I would be interested in talking to your friend regarding the paint work.  Is he local to the Dallas area?

I agree, ride it until the tank gets empty...as for your rib hurting...get out and ride, don't be a p*ssy.   [laugh]  jk  ;D  Hope you're feeling better.

If it's like the SBK quick releases they'll be on the base-plate of the tank where the lines connect.

I didn't know the 848 had quick releases until I ran a search on .ms for info on the tank removal.

hiero

looks like you have quick disconnects, but they're the later kind, not the same as the ones for the old sbks, tank removal should be as simple as you stated.  I don't see any gotchas at the moment.

I usually just siphon off what I can.  Remember, you have to pull the baseplate off that holds the fuel pump and everything inside the tank anyways, so get what you can from the tank, then drain the rest once you've got that off

He'll just patch up the marks, paint them back to black and clear the whole mess with a good layer. Nothing interesting. Just getting her back to normal.

Maybe one day when I have some cash to throw around I'll buy a second tank or something and have it done.

Yeah, she's a skunk, but the marks are on the side. One is near the "DUCATI" logo, one is way off by itself, so it's just some basic black paint that is needed.
