I could blame it on my malady of mental issues, or just admit I suck with numbers...or admit I'm stoopid. Whatever. But I posted this on my political forum and now here, so we'll see who's smarter: Ducati Monster riders or Libertarian Socialists. :P

I have to buy pads and rotors for my wifes car. I need:

2 front rotors @ $43.99 each
2 rear rotors @ $42.99 each
Set of rear pads @ $35.99 each
Set of front pads @ $41.99

I have the following coupon codes;

35% off any order over $50 with a max savings of $50
$40 off any order over $100

Obviously I'll need to split up the orders to maximize my savings. What is the best way to divide the orders without leaving a single penny on the table?

Correction - Submitted when I didn't intend to:

I did it to get as close to the $50 max for the 35% coupon.  Here's what I got:
Fronts added up = $129.97.
Using the 35% coupon your 2 front rotors & Front pads = $45.48 off that total (that's almost the max)
Final total for the fronts:  $84.49 plus whatever tax and shipping.

Your rear rotors and pads total $121.97.
With the $40 off $100 you get $40 off
Final total for the rears:  $81.97 plus whatever tax and shipping.

That doesn't compute. I'd get no discount on the rear pads.

You've got a total of $251.94 with no discount.

First, the smallest total over $100, to get you the closest to a 40% discount ($40 off of the over $100)

That's both sets of pads and one rear rotor, $120.97, getting $40 off.

Then the rest, which is $130.97, with a 35% discount, $45.84 off.

Leaving a total cost of $166.10.

Thanks guys, but everyone was wrong.

Getting closer to $100 would have been beneficial, but the closest combination still fell short of a 35% savings by over $2. Once the total gets over $110, the $40 off coupon becomes a worse deal than 35% off.

By buying the front and rear pads with one order, and both sets of rotors with the other, my grand total was $163.77.

Funny, when I do it that way, my calculator says you spent $184.65.

Pads, 35.99 + 41.99 = 77.98
77.98 x 0.65 = 50.69

Rotors 2 x 43.99 + 2 x 42.99 = 173.96
173.96 - 40 = 133.96

133.96 + 50.69 = 184.65

OK, I'll send you a check for $120.67, but I'll need you to send me the $100 back by Western Union.

My post says you spend $166.46.  Not a bad price from front and rear discs and pads.

None of this matters, because now I have to research every facet of brake pad and rotor technology. Drilled and slotted rotors will cool faster meaning less brake fade at the expense of slower stopping distance. I also have to consider whether or not the extra corrosion points in a slotted rotor is a bad idea in crummy OH weather. Then there's metallic vs ceramic pads. It's simple she says, just find me new brakes and install them she says. BS, I'm gonna be up all night researching this shit then she'll wonder why I haven't come to bed.  [bang]
