They could have been standing at an intersection and had the same thing happen.

It can happen to anyone, you don't have to be on a motorcycle.

RIP

S.I. Man Arrested In Connection With Deadly Manhattan Car Crash
July 22, 2008

A Staten Island man is under arrest in connection with a deadly car accident yesterday near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in Lower Manhattan.

Police have arrested Adam Greenberg, 31, and charged him with reckless driving and driving while impaired.

They say Greenberg crashed into two motorcycles on South Street yesterday afternoon.

Dimitrios Kazanas, 39, was killed. The other rider was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Police say Greenberg's car hit the cyclists from behind before jumping the curb at the ferry terminal and coming to rest on a cement traffic barrier. Greenberg was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

BASTARD

This gets me mad, because it could be anyone of us - despite acting like a hoot owl and looking behind us. This guy was likely impaired, and not paying attention.

I recall the MSF course quoting that only 3% of fatalities occur as a result of being hit from behind. I think it is much higher.

I've put off posting to this for a while.

How make the beast with two backsing tragic.

This city was bad for riders, and just seems to be getting worse.

RIP, dear rider!

Driver in fatal Staten Island ferry crash on drugs: cops

BY TAMER EL-GHOBASHY
DAILY NEWS POLICE BUREAU

Tuesday, July 22nd 2008, 11:08 PM

The driver that plowed into two motorcycles in lower Manhattan, killing one rider, was arrested for driving while high on drugs, cops said Tuesday.

Adam Greenberg, 31, was impaired when he tried to pass a city bus near the Staten Island ferry terminal Monday at the height of the evening rush hour, cops said.

Police sources said Greenberg of Brooklyn sped past the parked bus on South St. and rear-ended two motorcycles, sending the riders flying to the pavement.

His Volkswagen Jetta finally came to a stop after it crashed through a chain-link fence and mounted a cement barrier near Whitehall St., police said.

Dimitrios Kazanas, 39, of Queens, was crushed under the car and was dead at the scene, police said.

Another rider, who was identified by police sources as Gary Quinlan, 28, was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was in critical condition.

Greenberg was also taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering serious injuries.

He was charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving, police said.

Cops declined to say what drug Greenberg was found to have been high on.

Records show Greenberg completed an accident-prevention course just last month after a string of moving violations including speeding and dangerous driving.

He was involved in two accidents within weeks of each other in January and February of this year and also was twice cited for speaking on his cell phone while driving, according to the records.

Kazanas' neighbors said he lived with his mother and brother in Flushing and was often seen riding his motorcycle.

Mr. Greenburg and his wife are personal friends of ours. Its hard to offer a defense in this case, and I dont think he deserves one. We have all know about his poor habits and have tried to convince him to change his ways. Maybe we didnt try hard enough. Our prayers are with all families involved.

He should be charged with, at minimum, manslaughter.  I hope he gets brutalized in prison.  >:(

Why not involuntary murder or manslaughter?

I cringe to think how many other assholes like Adam Greenberg are cruising the streets of Manhattan right now.
What good is money if it can't inspire terror in your fellow man?

Find the population of drivers in Manhattan and divide by 2  [cheeky]

An update on the trial of Adam Greenberg:

This creature has never gone to trial and has been free on bond all this time. His next court date is July 29th in Manhattan Criminal Court in front of Judge Obus.

Two years, and apparently hasn't spent more than six weeks in jail. Disgusting.
