696 euro emissions

At a bike night last week I saw a red 696 and went over to talk to the owner.  We were talking and he pointed out that he removed the little black box on the left side just behind the front wheel.  I think he said it had something to do with euro emissions.

If you go here http://gallery.me.com/salonscott#100206 and look at the middle picture, you'll see it.  It has white writing on it.

Does anyone know anything about it.  Does having it on or off affect the 696 performance?

Thanks

like he said, it's an emmisions thing... charcoal cannister... recycles evaporated gas into the system or somesuch.  It doesn't do anything for performance, so if you don't care about the environment take it off... lots of people do... just don't yell at anyone for throwing a bottle in the trash.

Also, like he said, it's required for Euro emissions.  And California emissions. The other 49 states don't care if you take it off.

Being that i'm from Cali, i'm curious about the whole emissions for bikes thing...

... threadjack... what do i have to worry about in Cali if i take it off?  Cops going to know to look for it if i get pulled over?  (and do i need those stupid stickers they stuck all over my trellis?)

I don't mind it being there.  If it doesn't enhance performance then I'll just leave it on.  I guess I'd be doing my part to help the environment! ;D

Most people around here just like to see more of their engine...

i pulled it off.

when i went to the dealer, that shroud was the one thing that i hated.  all the pics i'd seen were of the euro-spec where they don't have that huge shroud and canister.

the thing i love about naked ducatis is how the engine hangs out of the bottom of the frame.  it really looks like they put an engine on a table and built the bike around it.  the shroud really detracted from that, so it's gone..... don't tell my tree planting, hybrid driving, scooter chick wife.

Actually, that is partially wrong.  At least the pre 2005 bikes that I studied while living in Europe and looking at their parts diagrams, the EURO bikes did not have them, but the US bikes did.

I included the EURO bike diagrams in my canister removal how-to FAQ:

Definately not a Euro emissions thing as all the bikes tested in Spain didn't have them. They also have the clean shroud which would be nice if we could order the Euro part.

thougth he was talking about a 696?
cos if it is then the euro emission laws change for 2010 and the 696 is already compliant.
Even with termis and dp ecu its compliant.
annoying that

Ok Guys (and gals of course)....just back from errands ride and could tell entire time something was "different".  Took bit to widdle it down, but in end IMO seems bike is running bit "ruff"  I have the 09 696 with just over 3K miles on it.  Running ruff meaning, say cruising in traffic in 3rd or higher, not steady revs....revs went from 2 to 2-1/2 without changing throttle position, but would even and smooth out with more throttle for moment.
Then, I had to pass a big truck on a straight and it seemed I had to REALLY twist throttle to get past-Yes, I DID drop a gear before passing as usual. So feels like lost some power maybe also?

THEN, back home, had Tim look at it and he ran it a bit in shop.....saw idle revs at 2 then 2-1/2. He then saw a line hanging from the charcoal cannister which, when he touched lightly, actually dropped down too easily and not attached at end to anything. Curious, he covered end and when he did, revs would drop from fluctuating as described at 2 to 2-1/2 to steady 2. When he uncovered end, it fluctuated again.  Also said there was suction at end of this line.

Tim is NOT 'dumb" about bikes or engines of any sort for that matter-BUT he is NOT educated on Duc's, Monster or Twins specifically.  Are there any pictures or a diagram showing lines etc from cannister we can refer to. OR, does anyone know if this line is SUPPOSED to be open-ended and where it should be run/put back now?

I actually prefer to remove this emmisions system anyways, but until that time, wanted to make sure all IS OK with bike and "normal"

THANK YOU and hope this is not re-post or stupid question LOL

There should be three lines on the canister, one to atmosphere and one from the canister branching into one for each intake manifold.  If you are feeling an awful lot of vacuum line from the manifold fell off, creating a huge vacuum leak in one or both cylinders.  If you look at the canister you should see where it goes.  If not, just plug the line and ride to the dealer.  This should be a quick, free fix.  There should be a diagram towards the back of your owner's manual.

Oh wow, sorry. Found diagram and things ARE run correctly, BUT still curious about odd idling and revs. COULD be temps-cooler today than yesterday, but did it when warmed up. Dunnoh, guess I GOTTA take him out for another ride tomorrow and "test" , damn.   [roll]   ;D

NekkedChic,

The canister "i think" has a one way valve or something to control vacuum. if you remove the canister altogether you have to seal the two vacuum ports on the intake plenums.

if the canister is allowing air to be sucked through it from the bottom tube then in essence it sounds like it is creating a vacuum leak to the plenums.

the canister is supposed to work like a resevoir for gas fumes from the fuel tank that accumulate in charcoal and then are sucked into the plenums. it's a  california emissions thing to stop gas fumes from leaking into the air. the only time the fumes are supposed to come out of the canister is probably when the pressure is high enough to push it through the bottom tube.

taking it off is simple and doesn't affect performance, unless again, you fail to seal those intake plenums, then it acts like your bike is now.

The canister is a California and other US C.A.R.B. state requirement.

For the record:
When we moved to California, my de-canistered 695 came with me.  The DMV checked the emissions sticker, noted the frame and engine numbers, and approved the bike.  They didn't look for, or likely even know about, the canister.
