Dealing with Road Rash (board rash actually but very similar)

Last week I had a couple sheets of melamine fall against the back of my leg.  Removed about a 2"x4" piece of skin.
I've been keeping it very clean and changing the dressing 2x per day.

Its been a while since I've had an injury like this....totally sucks.

Few questions:
Keep it covered or let it air out?
Pressure or loose bandage?
Any other tips or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

My totally unprofessional opinion:
Cover with a mild antibiotic ointment like bacitracin anc cover with a gauze pad.

when that has happened to me, during the day covered at nigths, uncovered so it airs and dries . . . at time I will spray some alcohol

It's kinda demeaning that road rash is classified under the mere "scrapes" section, but this is WebMD's contribution:

I clicked around and basically it says generally cover it to prevent it from getting dirty and infected.  But you can leave it open if you think it will not get dirty or rub against clothing (which would re-open it).

So I guess you cover it, but if you prefer to keep it open, clean it often.  So basically, what darkmonster said.  And yes, consume whiskey often.

Antiseptic, non stick dressing (like a pad), and a sticky c otton covering over that. Leave it on until it's itching like crazy, by then it'll be mostly healed. Leave it on in the shower, get it wet, dry it a bit and let it dry, just don't take it off until it's itchy or falls off on its own.
This is my go-to method for skateboarding road rash, works every time.

Back when I was racing road bicycles - and not very well - I got to deal with road rash on a regular basis. Far and away the best approach I found was a 3M product called Tegaderm. http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/3MC3SD/Wound-Care/Brands/Tegaderm/

Google turns up similar products by other manufacturers; I suspect they're pretty similar to one another.

You clean the wound VERY well and put the Tegaderm film over it; works best if the skin it's applied to has little or no hair (hence the shaved legs), but you don't have a lot of choice in the matter once you're hurt.

The film keeps the wound moist, and I noticed a dramatic improvement in recovery time, comfort & reduced scarring.

There are a couple of downsides - it's not cheap, especially in sheets large enough to deal with road rash, and it's hit or miss whether you'll find it in your local drugstore, especially in larger sheets. Because the wound keeps oozing under the film, you'll get a pretty disgusting bubble of liquid under the film - it looks pretty much like a massive blister, and every so often that liquid finds its way to the edge of the film and gets out, with messy results. I usually covered it up with roller gauze, both to hide the spectacle and to be at least a little prepared for when i sprang a leak.
