Exhaust and ECU question

I'll soon be in the market for an exhaust system for an S2R-1000. I'm curious if someone can share when an ECU is needed.


  • The full Termi kit came with an ECU, whereas the full Arrow does not. Is this because the Arrow doesn't need it? Or instead, perhaps it does need it and they just assume you'll buy it separately?
  • I'm also curious if anyone knows if I can still find the Termi system. From the looks of it, no one carries it. I'm eyeing some second-hand options, but I don't know if I should only look for full systems (pipes + ECU + filter), or if perhaps I'll be able to piece it together (slipon/midpipes from one seller, headers from another, etc).
  • Can I buy someone's second-hand (DP) ECU and system and use it on my bike? Or will this cause red key issues, for example?

Ducati got a deal with Termi. ;)
You could get your ecu reflashed to the pipes/mods. There are quite a few threads on it to search and bikeboy.org has articles on this model.

But I feel like I read an ECU re-flash is pretty pricey?

You could look at Power Commander options and the associated issues to deal with on closed loop injection models. A stack of talk about it here and bikeboy explores these issues.

Still curious if anyone has a quick answer regarding the exhaust and ECU. Hoping to pull the trigger on a deal before it sells to someone else.

Will a second-hand set of Termi slipons and DP ECU work on my bike? And if so, what steps, and what costs, will typically be involved? Red key issues? Reflashing? Time/cost?

You could get a "race" ECU rekeyed to your bike by your dealer. It is not like the OEM ECU that requires a special reflash at $500+ by a specialty shop.

What are the cost/benefits to that approach?

And is a "race" ECU something like a Microtec?

the termi kit came with an ecu as it is a ducati performance product and that's what they can offer.

arrow has nothing to do with ducati or dp, so no ecu.  remember back then an ecu on its own from ducati was $2,000.  as it is a full system, you would expect it will have more variation in fuelling needs compared to the dp kit.  they're good pipes.

there is no termi full system.  mufflers, ecu, airbox lid.  only 1 dp ecu mapping.  the header replacement pipe termi also offered was not supplied with a specific ecu.

dp are making old model stuff nla very quickly these days.  so most likely old dealer stock or s/h only.

"race" ecu does not mean race.  it's just a stupid term people use that sounds cool and because the disclaimer said "for off road use only".  it's just an ecu with mapping different to the oem ecu, and for post 2005 models usually open loop as well.  you can have your ecu reflashed with this dp mapping also, or any other mapping that you find offered.

if you buy a s/h ecu that has been coded to a bike's immobilisor, it won't work on your bike.  coded means had a key coding procedure carried out with the dp ecu.  most didn't do this ime.

Side-question: in the case that a s/h DP ECU has not been coded to another bike's immobilizer, is there any reason to still use the DP ECU over flashing a stock ECU?

I ask because the person I'm looking at buying the Termi slip-ons from said he'd just "throw in" the DP ECU, so I might have the option of that or flashing my regular ECU.
