Noise testing

I have a Monster 1100S.  I bought it with the Termingnoni exhausts but the previous owner had lost the baffles.  This evening I was pulled over for a random breath test and the friendly officer commented that my bike was loud and suggested I get it sound tested rather than wait to be "formally" asked to do so.  He did not book me (I said he was friendly!).  I mostly just commute to work, and this was only the second time I have been pulled over for any reason (both RBT).  My question is this: should I go to the effort of getting baffles made (I have researched and can't find them for sale anywhere) or just take my chances and see if I get checked again?  For what it is worth, I have a car so it would not be the end of the world if the bike was off the road for a while, whilst I have it made compliant.  Does anybody have first hand experience of whether the Termis, with baffles or without, meet NSW noise rules?  Putting the ugly OEM exhausts back on is not an option - I don't have them either, and they are UGLY.

If you have some digital verniers  (always handy to own)   http://bnrindustrial.com/products/lcd-vernier-type-engineers-calipers?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=googlepla&variant=688936413&gclid=CNiZo5Hvk8ECFZd7vQodnIcAwg
use the reverse side to measure the inside diameter and hunt down some cheap ones on fleabay.
e.g.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Short-4-Inch-Steel-Exhaust-Baffle-for-50mm-2-Inch-Drag-Pipes-/251653000201?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a97b00c09
As long as you have the mounting holes inside your Termis it shouldn't be to big an issue to fettle them in.  [thumbsup]

The diameter seems to be about 54mm, though it is a bit taller than wide (less than 1mm difference).  My other concern is that the end of the can seems a bit angled, relative to the cross section of the hole, so I might need something other than a straight baffle.  I will keep an eye out for proper Termi ones and make enquires from a local exhaust specialist, after the Public Holiday.

Thanks

I wouldn't give it a second thought until you're forced to do so, cops can issue you with a ticket at their discretion but they can't actually test you for noise unless they have the transport authority set up to do so, at least that's how i understand it. I've ridden dukes for 25 years and not one has ever had a standard exhaust on it for more than a month straight after purchase, i've been pulled over for numerous reasons numerous times but i have never once had a noise test or issued with a ticket for being defective. ( only for not displaying a rego label, which no longer applies)

I was pulled over for  RBT and the cop was querying my exhaust. Made me start it then and up the revs. Gave me a copy of a form that he sends to the RMTA suggesting that the bike needs to be tested. Only one garage in Sydney is authorised to do it, it passed (put it back to stock) but cost me $50 for the test. They asked me why it was queried (needed the info on the sheet) so I told him that it was due to the Constables lack of knowledge re bikes    ;D     Senior Constable Bbbbbbbbboyd was his name. I'd leave it as it is, your bike that is Stephen

I think this guy was trying to be kind.  We both knew my bike was too loud.  He asked if I was a local and said he would keep an eye out for me and check again if he spotted me.  I think he would have booked me if I had said I was passing through.  His argument being that if he gave me an infringement I would only have 14 days to sort it out but this way I could do so in a more leisurely fashion, but was on notice.

I am inclined to agree that he probably has better things to be doing that stalking me and the police presence on the roads around here is not high.  Saying that, if I get a Noise Test Notice, it will be a pain to get the bike passed.  I have e-mailed ProItalia as having a couple of baffles (in the bike or in the garage) would be a cheap insurance policy.  My neighbours might even appreciate it.

Mr.S2R

My S2R1000 came with Termis and no baffle.  I bought mine in Vic and when I had the identity check here in Adelaide the inspector commented on mine being on the questionable side for loudness (the Ducati 900SS he checked straight before mine had a bald rear tyre - go figure).  Whilst I dont have the baffles I do still have the original "udder'.  If I get pulled over I will put that (with additional deadening  ;D ) - which should get it well below legal.  Don't know if your bike came with the "udder" and whether that is an alternative to finding the baffles.

You could try posting in 'Parts Wanted', likely there's a scofflaw or two willing to part with them.

I've never understood how stock HD's can not be classified as overly loud and get pinged all the time. My bike is loud with the custom exhaust but it's nowhere near some of the lawyers-on-hogs I see cruising around.

stock hd's sound like a wet fart

when you remove the baffles its a whole different story
i dont care if you have been a mechanic for 10 years doing something for a long time does not make you good at it, take my gf for an example shes been walking for 28 years and still manages to fall over all the time.

Sure, but a really LOUD wet fart, imagine a dozen stubbies, a vindaloo and later a pie & mushy pea floater on the next morning, that kind of explosive emission  :o that makes your dog flinch and run away. HD.

Stock HD's are not loud at all.  Harley Davidson has to meet all the same regulations as any other motorcycle manufacturer, including noise regulations.  Trouble is every idiot who buys one goes out and immediately replaces the stock exhaust with a screamin' eagle exhaust that is loud.

To help the OP out, I ordered a set of db killers from Desmoworld for my bike.  Their site is in German but if you e-mail them one of their sales people speaks English.  I had no trouble ordering from them and the parts took only about a week to get to me (in USA).  They might have db killers that will work with your exhaust.  Whether they will pass noise testing in NSW I do not know.  In any case, they will definitely be less noisy than stock.

Thanks. I had looked at their website in the past, but forgot their name.  The exhaust is on a back-burner as my battery died again.  I'm in the process of putting it back in the bike to (hopefully) ride to have a mechanic work out what keeps going wrong.
I'll be honest - I have pretty much given up worrying about the noise.  ProItalia say they can no longer get the original baffles.  I'll have another look in at Desmoworld and maybe post in Parts Wanted.

I also ordered a set from Desmoworld, I have them in my bike now. After I'd ordered them I rang staintune and they also were able to help, it might be worth a call
