Super Duplex Stainless, started as 9" round solid. This shit is no joke to cut. Get it wrong and it will own you. I have it figured out.

Boring some cast stainless tube with a dampened boring bar. You can stick it way out and it won't chatter. It's awesome.

A small parting gift from some 1045 steel shafts I was cutting. Big chips. Big, hot, chips. This one stuck between my neck and my hoodie, which proceeded to press it into my neck more. All over in less than two seconds.





Sometimes I really wish I had larger equipment. This is all the clearance I had between the part and my drill. I measured it. .02". Twenty thousandths of an inch.

Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar kicked me out of the band..... they said I didnt fit the image they were trying to project.

Nope. Those drills aren't even carbide. Mfr rep didn't recommend pecking. Ran awesome. I don't have coolant through the spindle on that machine either ;)

I did use some Union Butterfield tap goop, so it's not quite the same as dry.

The machining forums all told me I couldn't tap super duplex and to thread mill it instead :D

Peck drilling tough materials has it's own set of problems.
In vertical applications loose chips can wedge between the drill tip and the bottom of the hole.
This forces the drill to push through the obstruction rather than cut.
Bad news for drills.

Can also work harden stainless and sooper duplex ;)
