shock suggestions?

I'd like to upgrade the shock on my ol '99 m750. I cant afford a nice Ohlins so I'm wondering if an OEM shock from a newer/better bike would fit. Plenty on ebay as owners of newer bikes ditch the OEM shock for something fancier. I figure anything newer would be better than a 16yr old Sachs.
So, what OEM shock would fit my m750?

I'm in the same boat. Temporarily, I bought a low mile OEM shock from a M750 and it works noticably better than my 32k mile worn out shock off my 98 M900. Seems to rebound better. Still need/ want a better one though. The basic Ohlins DU321 is about $650.

I know one of the suspension companies that move a lot of fork springs makes a kit in a box that has a shock. Not sure if they make them in ours though. Penske has nice stuff too but I've never looked at prices.

Thanks Member for bringing this up, I need some of this info too. If I can get out of dropping $600 for a plain-jane ohlins for something still pretty good, thats how I want to do it.

Penske offeres four basic models if I recal. The ones with remote reservoirs are offered in piggy back or remote.

With four models there's a bunch of price points. If you buy new, they will build to spec

I've not tried them, but a while back hyperpro had some decent looking budget options.

I put a Hagon shock on my '00 M750 a few years back and have been happy with it's performance. Did a bit a research before I pull the trigger and  it was a top choice for a lot of triumph guys in England as a replacement.

$439 for a monoshock ? I can live with that a lot better than $700. So can the wife.

I've been very pleased with the Bitubo XZE I installed on my 01 M750. Enough so that it's going on my M944 build. It's a 2 way adjustable shock (preload/rebound), nothing fancy but built to order for the weight you specify. Sub $500. Very well made part, billet collets/rings and a sexy red color. You can order them in a "lowered" 41" size or "raised" 61" and choose a black spring over the red if you prefer. PJ'S parts is the only Bitubo dealer I'm familiar with and he's great to deal with.

*edit: just saw the Hagon post above mine. Hooowee those are nice prices. I just may have to pick up their M60033 and add remote preload. I like that they are in the USA, keeping things Italian is nice and all but for suspension parts having  domestic support would be ideal.

Hagen makes quality products.  The description on their web site leaves some questions to be asked about those monoshocks unless I missed something.  Are they gas charged?  Emulsion?  Hi pressure monotube?  They might be a step or two down from the Sachs in terms of quality.

Thanks for the tips guys but the topic changed slightly away from the original intent.

I'm looking on ebay for a compatible OEM shock from a different Ducati. My guess is the deciding factors will be eyelet mount style/size and if there is a reservoir, will it be in the way.

The problem with shocks from other ducatis is they need nearly the same amount of money in the end to make them suitable for your bike.  AFAIK, the only directly compatible shocks come from hoop suspension monsters.  Those will likely all be shagged out...

This ^^^.

None of the other Ducs have the same length shock, other than the SS, but those won't have the right spring or damping, and they're piggyback reservoirs, not likely to fit.

I am almost positive nothing with a piggyback is going to work for you. Interference with the hoop and/or dog bone.

I also think I recall DucStu saying that the S*R monoshocks are a direct swap. The topic of shock compatibility came up in a few of the sss conversion threads.
