Old skool Monster owners: side covers - yay or nay?

Maybe it's been talked about before, but there's some new blood here so let's start anew.

What's your take on the side covers? I used to think it was a given that they'd get binned in a hurry, but they're kinda sorta growing on me. Yet I still kinda find them to be fugly. Must be my bipolar.  [laugh] One drawback to going naked is the nasty way Ducati routed the hideous wiring harness through the subfender/lower mudguard and outside the frame of the bike.

Maybe it's the whole almost 40 years old thing but certain OE elements I used to dislike are growing on me, like the OE switches, taillight, dash, even the front fender that I used to loathe.

I sorta think a NOS set of carbon ones would look nice with the other low key carbon bits I have on the build; i.e headlight bucket, gas cap key, other little farkles.

I also think there's a good chance I'd be chucking em in a bin or selling em here at a huge loss a week later, lol.

Just over analyzing as usual.  ;D

Keeping an eye on this one as I'm undecided.  Orginally I liked them but after losing one on my '95 M900 I removed the other side and I liked it.  I've since tried removing them on a few different bikes.  I tend to find the bikes that have been tail chopped leave 'em off, bikes that are long keep 'em on.  But like I say I'm undecided!

Side covers on, mat plastic is fine.  I agree, no tail chop, the covers look fine.  Tail chop, not so fine.  Covers on, the mess behind them doesn't show.  Covers on, the mess must be dealt with.

My vote goes to me  8)

Nice handiwork Lars! I've wanted to do that to a set of belt covers for a long time, never considered side covers. Is that gutter guard?

I really wanna find a pair of these...still mad at myself for snoozing on a brand new set Speeddog was selling.

IF IF IF you can find a pair of the old RoadRacing ones, they're bad assedness. I just got lucky and stumbled upon some by accident. I should have bought the other ones too and sand bagged them for a rainy day.

Thanks, it's bought as something to put in the front of a car, easily formed by hand and fastened with clear silicone.

yours will be a custom-why leave the ugly parts? use the small alum dp front fender you have. stock fender is kinda ugly & too big/ long.  put the belt covers on a shelf too.

ditch the sidecovers, not much wiring to hide behind them & allows the full truss to show. I ground off the sidecover mounts too but left frame ugly like that since my bike is stripped down & a patinaed rider.

Oh I mostly agree. And my DP fender isn't going anywhere. The OE fender I basically just went from hating it to thinking that it "doesn't suck."

I took mine off but very recently repurposed/reshaped them to cover the passenger peg mounts.  I think they look pretty neat.  I'll try to post some pics.

monsta

I left mine on to hide the crap behind it.
BUT, it also blends in with all the other carbon stuff and the shape/lines of it looks ok too I think.
even blends in with the pattern on the seat I reckon...

basically I think the design of the ol' monster is nice and it just needs tweeking.
A lot of non ducati people wouldn't know my bike is 'that' modified unless I told them.

Thats the way I wanted it..

My next build will be different!   [evil]
