Apparently different frame as well.

Has Ducati ever done a R Monster version before?
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.
- '00 M900S with all the farkles

Likely they just "found" the missing 15hp that exists on the Diavel 1200 motor but not on the M1200S engine, added some "farkles" and possibly a # plate to the top triple.

Oh, and a few extra #'s onto the pricetag.

Regardless of my cynicism, I'm curious to see what this is about.  The 1200 is growing on me...

I found the 1200S to be pretty boring when I test rode it, hopefully the R brings the fun back. Scrambler was a more engaging motorcycle IMO. Are you just enjoying the bike more?

I'll be very surprised if this turns out to be worthy of the R label.

Besides what Stew mentioned, maybe minor trail change and lower bars.

The engine/Corse departments must have had a fight with the marketing department over this - and lost  [bang]

What Ducati needs is a ballbuster in the StreetFighter segment - to show customers who's boss when it comes to performance. Not a best seller, I know, but a signal  8)

Ducati is the pretty girl that can't walk in heels without stumbling. I still love her.

Yes the S4R and then the S4RS

Slide Panda

No, the S2R and S4R were not R bikes in the sense I mean. The S4Rs was probably the closest.

I'm talking the mildly mental bikes like the 1098R and 749R etc that had a variety of race type stuff (and big price tag) from the factory.

I would rather see this than a Monster with more bling and a couple of more horses. I still think that a Monster should be air-cooled so what the hell do I know.

Maybe they shed some of the extra weight. The newer monsters were a significantly bloated to what they needed to be.

Dry weight 182kg vs the prior model's 168kg.

They are probably feeling the heat from the 1290 superduke and feel they need to respond accordingly to the challenge.

Hopefully this doesn't end up turning the monster design philosopy into a horsepower game between manufacturers. Then the old monster "Simple is better" adage will be truly gone forever. We're nearly there already!

Agreed ^

It is bold of Ducati calling the bike an 'R' model vs just an updated 'S' model.
