Last weekend the wife and I took a ride to Kinzua bridge state park to see the wrecked bridge, which I've never seen.

The short of it - in the late 1800's a local coal and oil guy, Kane, needed to cross a valley to make it easier to deliver product.  In 94 days they build a working bridge for his trains.  It was 300' tall and around 2000' long.

94 days.  Let that sink in.

After a while, trains got heavier and they needed to upgrade the bridge from iron to steel to handle the extra load.  Starting at the middle with two crane cars, they pulled a support and replaced it.  They both backed up and worked their way to the start/end.

Took 4 months.

Replace the original anchor bolts?  Naaah, why?  They're still working fine.

Big mistake.  There was a bad storm, 110+mph winds and they ripped half the bridge off the ground and left it in a heap on the valley floor.

They made a walk way out of what remained with a cool glass plate floor.  You can see for like 20 miles.

The level of destruction is pretty amazing considering it was only wind that did it.

And, for scale-

Anyone else keep reading it as "Monsterlover destroys a bridge"?

Wouldn't surprise me one bit, either.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

Surreal is a good descriptor.

Seeing it in person is truly awesome (as in awe inspiring ;) )
