Looking to purchasing my first firearm.

Now, I've shot a ton, everything from pistols (9mm Beretta sidearm, .357Magnum revolver) to rifles (M14, M16) to shotguns (Mossberg 12Ga, 16Ga), but I've never owned one.

I live in California, which limits me some, however my father lives in AZ. Intra-familiar transfers appear to be fairly easy and are exempted from a lot of the normal CA requirements.

That being said, I'm looking at something in a .40. Cabela's is having a pretty smoking deal ($299) on the S&W SD40. Haven't read any bad reviews.

Recommendations for a .40 at $500 or below?

Does your pops already own the firearm? Don't want it to appear as a "straw" purchase, especially in light of the recent events in SB.

For a range gun, better off with 9mm due to ammo costs, less recoil, and more selections on the effing roster.

There's a great indoor range in Oceanside that has tons of rentals, lane price is $14 for the day and ammo and firearm rental prices are VERY reasonable.

You got my number if you need a loaner, all you gotta do is feed it. ;D

Anyone looking to sell any 22 WMR ammo?

I stopped by Riley's this weekend. They had some.  Didn't look at the price.

I didn't buy anything.  The line was too long for me.

LAX Ammo has some good deals.  Yesterday they had 9mm for less than $0.18 a round.  556 is on sale today.  No real deal today.

I bought some of their reloaded 38 spl.  It worked great.  I'll buy from them again.

They don't have WMR, and their price is not what I consider good.

The guy that does my transfers will sell me 22 WMR for $11 a box when it gets in. I'm not paying a $4 a box spiff plus freight because someone has it today. Hunting season is pretty much over except for snowshoe hare which runs until March. I'll find some. I may get down to Rileys. but I doubt it. I may check in VT when I'm there over Christmas.

It's only a straw purchase if I wasn't able to own a firearm and/or was not planning on registering it. The fact that I will be filing the form for the intra-familiar transfer negates that. It asks for make, model, serial number, country of origin, how (and who) I obtained ownership from.

The M-9 weighs 33+ oz.

The SW is 22.7.

That's a significant difference.

Keep in mind that it doesn't matter what caliber you miss with or how fast you miss.

No doubt. That's why there will be range time for familiarization and continued proficiency. We may head to the local range and see what we can get our hands on to test out.

Personally I see no point in the 40 Short&Weak.

9mm projectiles have come miles. Check out some of the more recent tests.

That's not how a straw purchase laws works as I understand it. INAL and YMMV, but see Abramski v US

Just saying be careful.

We don't do gun law people.
