My nephew was on one...I forget which.

He was on the flight deck. I guess the landing area is wood. He told me that the captain of the ship made the pilots turn off the instrument landing feature on the planes because they were wearing a divot in the deck from hitting the exact same spot every time.

A few moons ago I was on a Carrier and the Sailors had taken two old Ford's, painted them up like demolition derby cars, welded a bar under the front end and hooked them up to the catapult. The front bumper was almost touching the deck. When they launched them all four tires lit up like a drag car and they shot off the the front of the ship about (?) 75-100yds and sank before we floated over them. It was amazing the power the catapult had on its own.

Maybe it was an old carrier? Like I said it's what he reported.

Yeah...I thing he was a plane captain...which is kind of a weird title for an enlisted person.

Been on two carriers, both nukes.

The flight deck is steel with non-skid similar to spray in truck bed liner.

Been shot off by the catapult, it's a crazy feeling of acceleration. Kopf's right, the fighter aircraft get to about 160 by the end of the runway.

They are quite powerful and can get up to "in excess of 30 knots" and I've been on one when we greatly exceeded that number.

Fun times, sometimes I miss it. Most times I don't...
