Got Duc

We just bought this!

I didn't drink bourbon until we did a tasting of Knob Creek at Jim Beam this year. It is amazing how the barrels are different by not only age but by where they are in the building.

Why do roaches always die on their back?

That because the survivors flip them over to steal their sneakers and wallets.

Nice!  How many $s?
And the sugar fountain fairy swore so hard when she came to super-size that stale hope soybean; liiiike a homeless German woman. Who is this super-sizing spirit-crushing femme? And tell her I'll break a tree root up in her shrimp.

Being faster than you thought possible…it feels good. No, screw thatâ€"it feels like shotgunning a gallon of adrenaline and chasing it with an all-night orgy aboard a burning Viking boat.

Just over $5300

1. Unforgiven and Elijah Craig 12 yr (which has been mentioned a bunch on this thread).  Nice, even flavor and a good inexpensive starter for me since it cuts well with a splash of soda or ginger.

2. The Magnificent Seven and Widow Jane 7 yr.  WJ is from a Brooklyn-based distillery (but process goes through Kentucky and the Catskills).  Was very good---smooth and a tiny bit peppery/spicy.  I recommend it if you can find it.  http://www.widowjanespirits.com/

3. Tombstone and Eagle Rare 10 yr.  Bought on recommendation of this thread.  Very nice.  Pretty smooth, a tad sweet.  And a little oaky; not sure what exactly the adjective is but I'm calling it oaky.  Anyway, would buy again.

4. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and High West Whiskey Bourye.  Blend of bourbon and rye whiskey.  Slightly sweet but not too much.  Soft, too.  I have been drinking pure bourbons so this was a nice rye / bourbon mix. http://www.highwest.com/spirits/bourye

5. The Searchers and Hudson Whiskey Baby Bourbon.  Was recommended to me by a bunch of folks, so I gave it a try (@ $45 for 375ml, a little pricey).  Smooth and a bit sweet.  Flavor was more complex than other bourbons I've been trying.  I liked it, but I think the complexity may need to grow on me as I finish the bottle.  Anyway, I recommend you try if you get a chance, since it has a uniqueness that is not like the others on my Westerns list.

6. The Outlaw Josey Wales and Breuckelen 77 Whiskey.  Been drinking mostly bourbons (as you can see), so was nice to try something with more rye.  Really really like this one.  Less complexity than most of the bourbons, especially the NY ones (which tend to have an earthy taste IMO), but easy to drink and a nice flavor.  As an aside: I've also had Breuckelen's gin, which I recommend and is very different from most gins I drink---it's a slight bit 'buttery' and fuller than typical gins like Hendricks.

Last two weeks:

7. 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and Basil Hayden.  Was recommended to me by saleswoman at a local specialty liquor store.  Not bad, but nothing memorable.  Would drink it again but wouldn't buy it again simply because there are other good options out there.

8. The Wild Bunch and Whistle Pig.  Vermont rye whiskey.  100 proof so had a little bite on first taste but once it opened up with a little melted ice, it was nice.

Almost done.  Two more films to go!

My wife put in an order for me for 2 bottles from the Orphan Barrel...

The premise is, barrels remaining from now defunct or closed or transitioned distillers in their portfolio are bottled and sold. They are extremely limited and some of them (Old Blowhard) are unlikely to be seen again.

Interesting.  Will look out for them, Zilbert.  Love the labels, btw.

He couldn't get me a bottle of the Old Blowhard so I grabbed a bottle of Blantons instead...

9. Silverado and Rock Hill Farms Single Barrel Bourbon.  First, praise for Silverado that in spite of its campiness at times it remains my favorite western, even on my 100th-or-whatever viewing.  Anyway, Rock Hill is one of dozens of bourbons owned by the Buffalo Trace company.  As for flavor, it was just what I think of when I think of bourbon, so you can't go wrong with it.  Still, it didn't have anything that stood out or called to me, just a standard bourbon-y bourbon.  But not really worth the extra money ($65)---plenty of better or more interesting bourbons at that level, and plenty of better options that are cheaper (eg Eagle Rare and Basil Hayden).

One more to go.

Bought Barterhouse as the bourbon for our last film (The Good the Bad and the Ugly).  Amazing!  [drool]

Easily the best bourbon I've had so far.  20 year old, sweet and a bit spicy.  Goes down smooth.  I couldn't stop drinking it.  At $80/bottle I was reluctant, but it is worth it.  I definitely would choose it over Widow Jane ($60) and Hudson ($45 for 375ml).  Not sure I would spring for 26 yr old Old Blowhard at $170-200/bottle, but the Barterhouse is just fine with me.  [thumbsup]

ZILBERT: go out and treat yourself to a bottle and let me know what you think.

Definitely a fan. Had several glasses over a game of Cards Against Humanity last Friday night and enjoyed every drop.

I will most likely be calling to ask my guy to set aside a couple more bottles just to have.

It is like the Orphan barrel bottles and limited. It was so good I went out later and bought another and put it in my secret stash.

Yeah?  Never been able to get into the rye varieties.  Their Doable Oak is mighty tasty though.
