Any lathe with a hydraulic chuck has a draw tube.

It connects the hydraulic actuator at the back of the spindle with the chuck up front.

It's a glorified pipe with M78x2 threads at each end.

See how the threads are only half there?

Not supposed to be like that. The mating part that's held captive in the chuck is also slagged.

I suspect lack of maintenance and high chuck pressure. When I pulled the chuck off today I got the distinct feeling I was the first one to do it.

The machine is 22 years old. We do this every six months or so on all the other lathes I have.

We tried to pull the chuck on this one a couple years ago when I first got the machine but couldn't get it to come off.

I tried a new method that works really well.

This all started yesterday when we found out the hard way that our clamping pressure was a lot lower that what the gage lead us to believe.

Shitty threads. I'm surprised it was holding things together at all.

We got lucky.

Well, lost my mill guy.

So I'm doing his job as well as my own.  Finding a replacement is not going all that well unfortunately.

Lots of mill work out there and I can't quote it because I know I won't be able to deliver on time.

I couldn't but even if I could I think he would have still left. He's young.

Mostly sure. My lender's board doesn't meet until the 26th.
