hi all, i hit a rock yesterday that put a pinhole in my ducati oil filter, looking for a new one, but find it hard to pay 27 dollars at the dealer. is there a cross reference for oil filters? i know there's a post in the "Alternatives to expensive Ducati parts" forum here in tech for fuel filters, but oil filters maybe? any help is appreciated. thanks!

$27!?  wtf... my local dealer sells the DP filters for about half that.  For the price I can get them at it's a toss up between brands, regarding the price.

Local moto parts shop has 'em, but I bought a couple of the Amsoil EAO filters recently.

depending on how often you change your oil, id just buy a few of them and throw them in the closet. They are only $12 bucks online.

You're never going to regret buying a couple more than you need at the time, expecially if it saves you shipping.

I used to do this with oil for my R6, go to the dealer, get a bunch of filters and 'no name' oil right out of the barrel (same as a certain AHEM 'branded' oil on the shelf) and I'm set for about 4 or 5 oil changes for the price of 2 or 3. Works out good in the long term. I'm probably going to be a lot fussier about the oil I put in my duc though.

I had the same thing happen to me 3 weeks ago.  Luckily I didn't crash...sounds like you didn't either which is good.  K & N oil filters are pretty cheap online...about $15.00.

Here is the most complete list I could find.  I last used the NAPA filter, and at that time it was made by Mann of Germany.  Excellent quality for about $7.

thanks everybody! i went down to my local cycle gear and they had a k&n for about 14. so i swooped up the last 3 they had in stock. i'm not so pleased with my local duc dealer.

I switched to using the K&N simply for the welded nut on the end of it. It makes removal sooooo easy.

Here's an interesting tidbit......if you are in a crunch and on a trip somewhere and NEED a filter but cannot find one, go to the local Harley-Davidson dealer.......yes, the local Harley dealer......There are certain mid-80's Harleys that use similar filters. I use the K&N 153 on my '85 FXEF, also.

(So, if you want a chrome filter for your Duc, you can use K&N 172C)   

The differences are that the KN-153 has a 1.45 psi higher pressure relief valve and is 0.209" (6mm) longer than the KN-172C. The KN-172C also does not have an anti drain back valve (so an OEM Harley filter should have similar specs to the KN-172C). The last time I bought a filter from the HD dealer, the black one was $5-$6. I think the old 100k+ mile engine can use the higher pressure that the KN-153 supplies, though
