So I swapped my front wheel for another model wheel, doesn’t really matter which for this question but I have a 848 wheel on my s2r1k.

The question is how do spacers work? I bought the right spacers, wheel fits, brakes and rotors all good... but when I got to my mechanic he said I had one spacer too many. The nut side has spacers but the other side is completely free floating. How does that work? Isn’t the whole wheel moving freely sideways if one side is free? Confused as I just reinstalled the wheel and it looks exactly the same with or without the spacer on the “free” side.

The question is really, if I manage to forget the order of the spacers, there are two, and there are no exploded view diagrams to go by (the Ducati workshop manual doesn’t even show the spacers anyway), how do I know I did the install correctly?

I think the free side is captured by the axel itself and doesn't use a spacer.

Exactly. The axle has a shoulder that butts up against the bearing and acts as a spacer.

848 wheel has two spacers, one each side as there are seals which older Monster wheels do not have.
Added complication for no benefit in the real world that I see.
Short spacer on the axle head side/right, long spacer on the nut/left.

There is variation on rotor offset amongst '848' bikes, it's troublesome usually.
