so it looks like a new installation of windows xp pro on a new internal drive i got in a couple weeks back has somehow make the beast with two backsed my external WD 500gb hard drive.  it's now attempting to access and doing a 3 clicks, stop, 3 clicks stop routine...and i can't access it at all.  i was planning on copying all the pics/warez/pron over right after the install...looks like that's potentially gone.  who would have thought a windows install could brick an external usb hard drive like that?  i can't help but think that this is all related to installing SP3 on the new copy of windows...after uninstalling SP3, i can no longer use windows on that drive; i'm now back on my original drive and version of XP...except now sans porn, games, and accumulated pics from over the years.

anyway, just wanted to vent, because that sucks.

Bill Gates feels your pain!  [bang]

Have you tried connecting it to a different computer? I would give that a go and see if you still have a problem.

yeah, i'm going to bring it into the office later today...if it's still make the beast with two backsed here, then it's just make the beast with two backsed, i guess.

luckily i priced some data recovery services, and was getting low quotes of only $1000.  what a deal.

yeah, no kidding....they make it very easy to navigate to their "recommended" data recovery partners on the WD site...  the drive is only about six months old.  i would expect this from maxtor, but not WD.  maybe it's time to go back to being a seagate fanboi.

I got a hd recovered for 200-300. Want me to dig up their number? We were told it was completely toast but they got my stuff back. I think it's cheaper for an individual than a business.

is it mechanical?  you said you were hearing the clicks, stop, clicks sounds?  that could be mechanical...  if it is, you may in for expensive recovery.  if the filesystem is just screwed, let me know, I can help you take a look at it without going the expensive route....  i have some recovery tools.

if it is doing the "click click click.....  whir.....  click click click'  then the heads might be stuck.  you might pull the drive, give it a thump with your finger and try again, if you are lucky, you might unstick the heads....  if that works, do a backup immediatly, because it's probably going to get stuck again...

I agree.  Brute force still works on some of today's technology.  Remember back to the days of grandpa pounding on the top of the console TV in order to get it working right when it would act up...

Windows XP?  I thought you were l33t?  Where's the Vista love?  You could have avoided all this.  Didni't you know XP-SP3 is a MS virus intended to force you to reformat and upgrade to Vista?

Sorry to hear of your loss of such valuable and irreplaceable data.  pr0n and warez are so hard to come by in the interweb...

i'm going to put it in the freezer a bit tonight, and try again...i'm sure a few thumps will be involved as well.

that sounds pretty accurate; because pre-SP3 version of XP the drive performed flawlessly

not sure if i'm sensing some sarcasm there....but 500gb of porn, games, and music can take a while to d/l.  it was quite a chore amassing that.  not to mention the actual stuff like vacation photos that would also suck to lose.  i of course kept the "most valuable" porn in a safe place.   [thumbsup]

yes, sarcasm intended.

Definitely sucks about the vacation photos.  Specially if they were double-duty - vacation pr0n.  [laugh]

This is my fault.  I attempted to provide a useful answer.  Lesson learned.  Back to smack talk and boob jokes.

That's what SHE said!  Shazam!!  oh no he didn't!!
