I think if it actually indicated anything secret about design or technology, they would try to hide it?

No, I think it's a dynamic indicator of their involuntary reflex activity going into that particular corner. We've all seen telemetry from lean angle indicators, throttle and brake sensors, and gear indicators. This is just the latest sensor, and it's in the rider's leathers: if it's a number 1, the rider pissed himself going into the corner. If it's a number 2, well, you're more likely to see that around the corkscrew
