Dealer M696 Termi Install gone BAD - FOR SURE - Updated!

Gents,
Earlier in the week I dropped off my bike for the 600mi service and to get my CF Termi's installed.  The dealer found that my bike was one of the 'gifted' ones that had the coil wires reversed...So they fixed that, did the service, and installed the stuff.  They even gave me a dyno sheet (they only ran it up to 7k or so it seems).
So I happily hop on and ride off.  The one thing I noticed is that when I started it up; the display just read like normal....All the other movies I see online their display reads "MONSTER 696 RACE".  Mine doesn't.
Bike was running super; and the exhaust sounded BADASS.  I actually was shocked at how loud it is WITH the baffles - cannot imagine it w/o (but damn right Im gonna try :D ).  About 3/4 of the way into my 40mi trip home, I was on the highway doing 65mph and I noticed the bike start to surge....So I look down and see the temp bar FULL (not blinking yet..).  So I ease off, downshift and let the revs come up.  At this point the bike is loosing speed, and I am on 95 - so I give it a little gas to get back above 60mph and it starts pinging like MAD.  Like I heard it over the termi's, in a fullface helmet, doing 60mph !  I recalled the advice on this board just to ride it out, so I did, just gradually trying to keep the revs up w/o pinging.  About 5mins later, the temp went back down to -2 bars from full, and the rest of the trip was uneventful.
What happened ?  Not sure yet.  What I can say, is that the bike's fuel gauge came on about 1/2 way through the trip, and I put an additional 10mi on it.  Once full, the pinging started approximately 5mi after the fillup.  Bad gas maybe ?  Who knows.  What I can say is that after letting the bike sit and cool down, I took it for a short (10mi) ride and all seems fine.  Maybe to be safe I will get some gas treatment and toss it in there....

We'll see how the weekend goes.....

-Steve

UPDATE - It seems to be a FUEL issue.  I put some drygas and octane booster in the fuel, topped it off with fresh gas and everything seems fine again (Put 100mi on it this morning).  Time will tell though...

Hmmm. 1st off I wuld question the Dealer about the Display. I am assuming that a NEW ECU was installed with the Bike when the exhaust was added. If not,,,, your 696 may be running a little lean,, which may be why is was running so hot.

The pinging & loseing power kinda scares me. Any engine noise is a concern.
I would definetly look into this & keep a good ear to the motor. I am not sure if a compression test would tell U anything ? ? ?

I questioned the dealer about the ECU immediately - before I left the lot.  Both the service manager and the tech said that they haven't seen a US 696 kit say 'RACE'.  However, when I took my box O parts home, guess what was missing ?  The old ECU  :-X

Your signs and symptoms sure sound like a lean running bike.  I don't know if there's a separate part number for the Termi ECU, but I'd think there would be.  Look on the part and call another dealer and ask them.  I suspect they put the cans on and called it good.

Raux

well not to name names... but what dealer did you go to... anyone from there on here??? and if not anyone else that uses that dealer have problems???

maybe we need to get a dealer feedback section started.. you know "rate" you dealer on service, price, quality, or in general.

In this case, sounds like your dealer tried to pull one over and not install the ECU and air filter... then make a pretty penny later?... or just a bad tech?

Ya - any idea as to how I can easily look at the computer to find the P/N ?

Hopefully someone can help me out.....

Here is a photo of the ECU that is on the bike right now - the supposed Ducati Performance one...That doesn't display 'M696 RACING'

Anyone have a photo of the DP ECU ?  Board Sponsors perhaps ?

Have you tried talking to the dealer again? maybe asking where your old ECU is?

SteveH

Here's the timeline:

-I pick up the bike, turn the ignition on.  First thing I notice is that it doesn't display the RACE crap.  So I ask the service manager, who talks to the tech.  They assure me that only the 998+ bikes will display that.  I disagree, but they assure me it is the right ECU.

-The pinging/overheating happens about 5mi from home

-Call Service manager as soon as I get home and discuss

-Go through the spare parts, and do not find an ECU.  Unfortunately they closed by the time I had a chance to look; and they do not reopen until Monday

So at this point, I just would like to know what is going on.  It is still too early to say about fuel milage, etc...So all I have to prove my case in one way or another is to see if the P/N on my ECU is the same as on a stocker or not.

Ya - I looked there too.....As this is my first Duc, I am not sure if the catalog order number = actual part number (BMW is different too...)

Steve, how far did you ride the bike after the shop... that part looks used? or is it a bad photo. The new part should be pristine.

this is the kit as it should look from a shop in texas http://www.advancedmotorsports.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=96452509B
