Easiest way, if you can see the right side of the bike, is to look at the timing belt covers.

The 1000 is a Dual Spark engine, so the belt covers will have spark plug wires going through a hole in them.

Also, the 1000 is a dry clutch.  If you can see the clutch cover up close you can tell the difference.

Other than that, I'm not sure.

the 800 has a wet clutch and smaller front brakes with 2 pot calipers,
the 1000 has a dry clutch, larger (320mm) front rotors with 4 pot calipers.
