Bike only starts in neutral (yes, even with the kickstand up...)

Hi Everyone,

So I have a 2004 m620 and it will only start in neutral, prior to getting rear ended I could start it in 1st as long as the kickstand was up... I think there is a switch on the clutch lever but I am not much of a mechanic. The bike fell in the crash and I have some Pazzo levers on order, can I fix this easily when I install the new levers?

Yes and no.  The new lever will not fix the proble.  There is a microswitch on the under-side of the clutch.  Trace the connection back to make sure the wires are connected properly.  Next see if the switch got knocked out of alignment during the crash. It should sit flush with little/no play.  Third, check to see if the rod on the clutch lever is making properly contact with the swith.  If everything is fine, then you probably have to replace the switch.

switch is about 80 dollars and it is a very common issue with Ducatis.

$80 can go suck it. Radio shack! And ive never heard of it as a "common issue with Ducatis" It breaks when it breaks, in yoru case the accident caused it.

So is this the little "button" that the clutch lever presses when I pull it all the way? Like a little tiny silver button? I suck with this shit because I have no time for it.

Could be a short in the kickstand safety switch as well.  If the ignition system always thinks the stand is down, it won't start unless that's bypassed by having the bike in neutral.  I would radio shack it up and splice a really simple switch into the clutch lever switch (or just bypass it alltogether) to see if that solves the problem.  The bike starts fine....you're golden.  The bike still falters, look at the kickstand switch.

On my bike the switch is released when the lever is pulled. I have no Idea whether or not the circuit is then closed or opened. But this is all beside the point.....
