I've seen many of these nuts damaged. I call it a nut, I'm sure there's a technical term for it. I had two different tools that both caused damage to the holes so this is how I accomplish the removal of the triples without causing any damage at all...

1) Safely support front end of your bike with the front wheel about 6" off the ground. This makes it much easier to lower the fork tubes. You can also lower them one at a time, but it's more difficult.
2) Loosen Upper and Lower allen set screws on the triple clamps.

3) Lower the fork legs until the top clamp can spin without hitting the forks

4) Tighten lower triple allen set screws
5) While looking at the bike, front to back, turn the wheel to the left and loosen the allen set screw on the top clamp and then turn the wheel to the right and move the top clamp left.

6) Tighten the allen set screw on the top clamp

7) While holding the wheel to the right hit the top clamp left using a rubber mallet or dead blow hammer (DO NOT USE ANYTHING HARD) while paying attention to the location of the allen set screw that tightens the top clamp onto the lower clamp nut thingy...

You can turn the wheel to the left while following step 7 to give more turn at the lower triple clamp nut.

if you go too far you will have to turn it back a little to reach the set screw to loosen.

8) Loosen the allen set screw and repeat steps 5-8

am i the ONLY person that found this clever? I just took my forks off and bought the red park tool to remove the nut, i could have saved a couple $$ & some time waiting for those damn things.

Thanks Motored-Sports!

I've never removed my forks but when I do, this'll be super helpful!
