I believe it is not good for any vehicle to sit for months and years without running.  The spotless exterior covers up a lot of internal problems.

The '64 Riviera my dad and I restored taught me that lesson a long time ago.

The engine's oil will drain thanks to gravity, leaving bare the the cylinder walls, heads, bearings, etc.

Oxidation and rust set in.  I believe some Japanese bikes have plasma coating on the engine cyclinder walls, but not Ducati.

New owner comes along, puts the key in, cranks it over, damage is done, then wonders why it runs so crappy.

I would rather buy a well-maintained, normally operated machine any day over any of these.

Long-term storage of high-performance vehicles is a very tricky propositon.  It's better to run 'em.

That's my take on it.

158K for a 993 turbo Porsche? That's make the beast with two backsed up. Those bidders are complete and total morons. Let's see, I can go buy a new Porsche 911 with a few options... OR I could pay the same for this 11 year old one which is slower, less refined and used.

The $158K is already $6k more than he spent on it at the reserve hasn't been met yet. WTF?

It's called using eBay to publicize you are selling something but not wanting to sell it via eBay.  It works.  Someone then posts the ID for the listing and everyone looks at it via discussion forums, etc.  People talk.  Very cheap form of advertising.  Easy enough to contact the person to do a transaction later.  Done every single day...

Ducati cylinders are nikasil coated. They won't rust.

Everything else will.  ;)
