This is most likely a stupid question, but does the s4r have a seat under the rear cowl, it looks as though it has bars for a passenger to hold onto that is part of the frame, but I have never seen any pics with the s4r without the rear cowl on?

turn the key on the rear underportion of the seat and the seat comes off, the cowl is held on with two screws.
You now have access to the tool pouch wich is built into the seat and has a cable to lock your helmet to that little little post on the frame.I know you didn't ask about the helmet lock but was saving you the agravation because I didn't know it had one for the first week I had it and was forced to carry my bucket around.
ride on!

It is not out of the question that after short experience your passenger will deny that what is under the cowl merits the description "seat".

It is. I have one.  :)

some poor sap in the South paid almost 400$ for my passenger pegs for my S4r on Ebay last year.

I don't think monsters are very good 2-up bikes

I was the passenger on an s4r for a little while. Not fun. I was so glad when my bike was fixed and the ex could take the passenger pegs back off the s4r.

Girlfriend complained with the standard seat; too hard, the DP Gel seat doesn't seem to be too bad pillion wise as it is softer for the pillion.

Any additional "stuff" should go in a tank bag so that she/he doesn't have to carry an additional heavy bag. Try to keep the weight centralised.

The lack of grab rails is not a major issue with an experienced pillion. If you are worried then I suggest you buy one of those belts that has the hand hold for the pillion woven into the back. Google "Pillion Belt"

I don't like toting people around on my S2R.  Makes me nervous. Not much seat at all.

S*R's suck for passenger. 30 min. and it's time to get off.

Yeah... I agree... but my wife prefers them to the 848... with the seating position being very close to horizontal... and the seat being... well... a tiny, thin, piece of vinyl, stretched over what must she claims is pure steel.

Want a passenger... go for a ST or Strada.

What's wrong with that? Who normally goes more than 80 miles on a twisty ride?  :P
