Over this long weekend, I'm doing the 30,000 miles service on my '99 M750.  Aside from the obvious stuff (inspect belts, valve clearance etc) are there other problem areas I should check out?  I've got LT Snyder's manual that got me through my 24,000 job.

Thanks!

I'd check the steering head bearings for play if it hasn't been done recently.

Grease 'em too.

Have your swing arm pivot bearings ever been lubed?

You're always good & helpful DP, you know that?

Good suggestions, I've not checked either.  I'll add that to my list, thanks!   [thumbsup]

I also think I should look into the carbs.  The bike smells fairly rich and I'll be the emulsification tubes are worn.  Everything in the carbs is completely stock AFAIK.  I've made no adjustments since I've owned the bike.

Order a set of needle jets.

If they haven't been replaced by now they're certainly ovaled.

Does it use much oil? Maybe a leak test f rings.
Brake pads, fuel lines, clutch pack check.
Check wiring around steering head f wear, risk f a short.

I would check the clutch throwout bearing.  I had one fail just after 30,000 miles on my ST2.  It took the clutch slave with it.  I think a replacement bearing was less than $10.00, but the slave was about $128.

If the belts are more than two years old, don't just check them, replace them.

Check brake pads for wear.

All on my list to check.  As I was checking my valves, I did notice my piston had a LOT of carbon build up on it.  Looked like greasy charcoal piled on there.

It doesn't use oil ~

What octane fuel are you using?

87-89.  I was planning on running some Seafoam through it once I got everything reassembled to clean it up a little.  My vertical plug looks richer than my horizontal one, but I understand that might be normal ~

Skip the 89.

So either run 87 or the top end stuff (92-93)?  I usually put 87, but some stations don't have anything below 89 and I have to get 89 or 92-93.  I was thinking it was supposed to have 87 ~

no...

use the lowest octane available.

The worn needle jets may be adding to your carbon issues....

although I don't really think so.

I always grab the lowest grade at the pump.  I ran some Seafoam to try to clean everything up a bit.  I'm going to order some replacement needle jets (these are the same thing as emulsification tubes, right) and take care of that.  The plugs indicated a slightly rich environment though, which isn't helping ~
