Recovering an 01 M750 Dark from 2 years of non-riding

For a lot of reasons irrelevant to my problem, I haven't ridden my monster (01 750 dark, DP (Remus) pipes) in almost two years. I had the bike on a stand and on a battery tender (which was stolen several months back), but unfortunately, that's all the winterizing I did (go ahead - tell me I'm stupid  - I know it). I also left it with only a quarter tank or a bit less, so I'm sure there was quite a bit of condensation in the tank.

So - I put a new battery in last week, checked the fluid levels and cranked it up - surprisingly, it sounded good, and I took it for a spin. It blew out a bit of black smoke, but ran as well as I can remember. I've taken it for a spin almost every day since then, and it's run surprisingly well - except for today. Today, it's running more like I feared it would. It won't idle (dies if I release the throttle), and is sluggish. I took a quick look at the plugs and hoses, and didn't see anything obvious.

I'm going out of town for the week, but when I get back I plan to change the oil (yes, I should have done that first) and check the fuel filter. Should I drain the fuel system entirely and clean it out? Is there anything else I should look for or do to get the bike up and running normally?

Pedro

Drain the fuel, if it has carbs (sorry don't know!) then I'd be inclined to whip the float bowls off and clean them, the refill with fresh. A oil change and a fresh set of plugs wouldn't hurt.

BUT, above all, change the belts. If you leave it idle for any length of time the belts will take a "set" around the shape of the rollers and at nearly two years since you've run it, they're due a change anyway. Personally, I'd not run it again until they're changed - only a few bucks and 20 minutes to change them for peace of mind (much expense if they let go)

Definitely change the belts NOW.  Fresh fuel, filter and Sea Foam may help you avoid a carb tear down.  Change the brake and clutch fluid too.  If your tires are 5 years old or older consider a new set.

Thanks! This list is as great as it was two years ago when I had to stop riding - I wouldn't have thought of the belts, but that makes complete sense. I'll take care of it all asap (before I do any more riding).

Howie, how d'ya expect me to ever add anything to the tech section if you nail it spot on right away?

Sheesh!

BTW-I would do everything Howie said. You should've also changed the oil first, and drained the tank if there was no stabilizer in it. Live and learn. Welcome back.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

If you've got the float bowls off make sure the jets are clear.
