I'm sure all the Dark lovers will cry blasphemy, but...

I've read of people putting clearcoat on a Dark finish, but haven't seen any pictures.  Anyone have any??  How does it turn out?  I'm imagining a glossy charcoal color, which would be awesome.

I decided not to chop anything or too and also no ugly carbon.
I have a black/red one and it needs more shiny black parts.
I will get a professional spray painter to paint ALL matt black parts shiny black.
Side panels, tail, sprocket cover and rear fender for now...belt cover if possible (heat ?)
Also I will get the belly pan and do the same.

True...guess I should have been more specific!  I'm thinking a gloss clearcoat sprayed on top of the matte black factory paint.

You can't sand the metallic paint without damaging the appearance.

Good point, that's why I'm not a painter...  So, the only way to change the appearance of the Dark paint would be to sand, apply another basecoat, and then clearcoat??

Or if the clearcoat that is already on is thick enough, you can have it polished out till it's shiny.

Shiny and matt both are clearcoats but depends how they are polished. That's referring to the post above that the colour already has a clearcoat. If it doesn't then no it's different.

The dark models do not have clearcoat on them.

It is a flattened single stage paint.

If you sand it you disrupt the orientation of the metallic.

You then must re-apply the color and then gloss clear over that.


That being said, if you have actual paint skilz and a place to do it, House of Kolor has a product called AP01. Look into what it does and decide if it sounds like a good idea for your project.

Thanks for the info...the AP01 Adhesion Promoter looks like it might do the trick.  They say it works w/ paint that has already dried or when  you're having difficulty making paint adhere.  It's also clear and seems like it would work well w/ a clearcoat.  The only questions is...would it be cheaper to just have it repainted or buy the Adhesion Promoter...

Still wish I could find some pictures of this is someone has done it before.....anyone??

the AP01 is about $40

you must work within it's window or the clear will not stick.

follow the directions to the letter.

Another method might be to assist the AP01 is clean/prepare the tank with a WHITE scuff pad and some scuffing agent (avail at most auto paint stores) or at the very least some Ajax and the WHITE scuff pad.

This will clean the surface and put a slight sctach into it.
