Are all 180 tires trully the same or are some a bit thinner then others on their outer most lip. I have power pilots and  the lip rubbs my chain. do i have options in 180's or do i need to look at 170.  wait are there 170s that arn't avon slicks?

Different brands or types of tire of the same brand can have significantly different widths despite being labeled as 180.
Occasionally AFM #702  My stuff:  The M1000SS, a mashed r6, Vino 125, the Blonde, some rugrats, yuppie cage, child molester van, bourbon.

What rim size are you mounting this 180 on?

The tire sounds to be clearing the swingarm fine.
there are a couple of things to check
1. chain alignment, if off a bunch the chain will hit the tire edge.

2. did you change the orientation of the front sprocket when you put the 5.5inch rear wheel on?
on the 4.5inch set-up the front sprocket is spaced inwards for proper alignment.
on the 5.5 inch set-up the sprocket is reversed and the outer side is flush for alignment.

good luck

I think he's on to something.

hmm thats a thought. lets see, the flat side of the front sprocket is out and the alignment looks good, nothing obvious. any better way to check then eye'n it.
