So I wonder if my Shoei is still good, it's fallen off my bike no less than three times and has a few chips in it.

I started out with a Scorpion helmet (which I'm sure there is nothing wrong with, safety wise), that really didn't fit me right.  It started to bother me and get annoying after about an hour of wear to the point of distraction.  The best thing I did was buy my Arai helmet.

That was great -- thanks for sharing!  Though I did wince pretty hard at the footage of Nakano's crash -- not the crash so much, as bad as it was, but the medics WRENCHING his helmet off even as they're preparing to strap him to a back board!

you all probably know this already but...

the problem with a dropped helmet is the impact can compromise the internal padding (the stuff that actually protects your dome by absorbing the energy of impact) in a way that you will never be able to tell. well, that is until you need it in an accident and it isn't able to protect you as well if it could (if at all). the same rule applies to helmets that have been in accidents. once the internals of the helmet have absorbed impact energy, it cannot do it again.

I'm glad he mentioned the dropped helmet issue. So dropped helmets (such as dropped off the seat or bar) are still good because there is no weight inside and the outer shell just dissipates the energy with out transferring it to the inside.
