The 1098 series is definately getting the 1198 motor, but not at 16K.  (at least not for long)

there will be a naked bike using the outgoing 1099cc motor from the current 1098 series.

and they're building a motard.

;D
It's still buy a flounder a drink month

its the 1098 R motor without the fancy parts, shocks etc etc.... coming in 2009 $16,500 180 hp

The 2009 Ducati 1198 will use a less expensive version of the 1098R's engine...

According to a report on Hell for Leather, Ducati are ready with the 1198 for 2009. The bike is expected to use the 1098R's engine (which already displaces 1198cc), but perhaps with some of its components replaced with less expensive, less exotic bits.

The Ducati 1198's engine is also likely to be in a lower state of tune compared with the 1098R's engine and is expected to produce about 170 horsepower – 10bhp down on the 1098R. The base model 1198 will cost around US$16,500 while the 1198S – with higher-spec suspension and electronic traction control – may be closer to US$21,000.

The 2009 Ducati 1198 will be lighter than the current 1098 and may get minor styling updates as well. Apart from this, Ducati are also expected to release a Monster 1100S for 2009, which will get high-spec Öhlins suspension, and a brand-new super-naked which will be fitted with the current 1098 engine.

More details on these and other 2009 Ducatis soon...

Hey you're right, it does look similar.

I think that is a KTM 640.  Could be wrong.

Strange it looks like it still has the cat too.

Back on topic, I wonder what they will do next year for the 'R' bike?  Same as current, rebadged as the 1198R?  Depends I guess on what actual engine components get changed from the 1098R to the 1198.  If it's cams and flywheel and other goodies, or just a different ECU (likely both).  If ECU was all, people could probably just throw it on their 1198 to get the R's output  [evil]

sorry back on topic.

i think the idea of the 1198 is a great one.

although what i see is ducati making everything more expensive. they are moving out of the market segment.

they need to bring back the small SS and Monster bikes.

they used to have a SS400 even I think.

Very cool bike!

yea, that bulge in the header looked just like the cat on my other bike (FZ6).  I thought it would be weird for a badass race bike like that to have a cat!   [laugh]
