Buy a used tank, or get it fixed and repainted?

I learned a lesson here. Dont buy a bike with bubbles in the paint job up where the infamous tank dent from the handlebars are. Sounds like a no brainer, but at the time I bought it, he told me it was silver and he didnt like the color so he had it repainted, the guy did a good job but two quarter sized bubbles appeared over time he says. No big deal, he took off $200. I wanted the bike real bad, so i just figured id deal with it later you couldnt really see the bubbles anyways.....

So the bubbles got bigger over the last year ive had the bike, they become the size of 50 cent pieces now finally they joined as one huge bubble and this bubble finally burst open yesterday.  I looked in and hey theres some sort of white stuff in there? After peeling that back (now the holes the size of a baseball on my tank) its bondo, after scraping off the bondo i see a dented tank. One deep dent about the size of a dime. If you put your nose up there to the dent, yep you can smell the faint smell of gasoline. [clap]

Awesome! So not only do i have a dented tank, but damage to the tank internally as well and it needs a new paint job!  [bang] [bang] [bang]

So, here my question. What should i do?

1.  Buy a used monster tank locally (does anyone have one for sale?)

2.  Send it to ducpainter.  (i hear he does a great job)

3.  Claim it on my insurance and get a new tank (would that work for something like this?? Would my rates go way up?)

Any help would be appreciated.

Local used tank means you are back on the road quickly.

Ducpainter repair means a properly prepared tank with a reinforced hinge, POR 15 treatment and a swanky new paint job.

I doubt this is an insurance claim.  It isn't collision or comprehensive since the damage happened to the previous owner.

another plug for sending the tank to DP. doing so will get your tank fixed inside and out.

AND a swanky paint job  ;)

I hear he sends out poptarts with all redone tanks, so there's that.

Not sure which ducati model have but there are some tanks for sale on ebay (make sure you read the "all about fuel tanks" post here before you buy. There are several different model tanks and you need the right one or it wont work.

I actually have a bid on one --- I am considering a custom paint job but want to keep my original for trade in later.

What does Ducpainter charge for repair and paint vs paint only?

I'll be sending him a tank (maybe two) if I ever get my act together. So you can take that as a vote of some sort of confidence.
