It would be nice for them to make an 848 monster to replace the s4r and a 1098 monster to replace the s4rs because I too am a little bummed that the new monster is over 1k cc's.  My insurance is high as it is with my age and if I were to upgrade later on I hope there are a few more options.

Yeah but if you upgrade later, you'll also be older! Win-win!
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

I love my S2R1000 for less than half the price of this new bike.

Because I'm in Canada where we get 1/10 the quantity of bikes that the states does.
Let me clarify,  I droped off my VFR on trade for the new M1100 before the pics were released on the understanding if I didn't like the bike I could switch to another Duc.
Fortunately I love the new monster.

Cheers

But my question is, why $5500 when you could have put down $1000, or even $500?

I think by "$5500" he meant that he gave them his VFR as a trade-in.

It'd be kinda hard to give them $500 worth of the bike and hold onto the rest of it.

You could just give them a wheel and tell them they'll get the rest when the bike comes out.

i hope you got plenty of signed paperwork for that.
leaving the bike with them gives them time to try and sell it, which could have the following results.
1) they sell it, your deal falls through, your old bike is gone
2) they sell it, new owner has issues and returns it, they decide its not wotth as much
3) it doesnt sell, they decide its not worth what they agreed to pay

problem is when you leap of the 1k cc barrier your insurance goes up. so another bike below 1000 would be nice in the Ducati lineup.

the have nothing now below 1000 except the 696 and 848 (which as a sport bike shoots insurance way up anyways)

oh to have the 750/800SS back in a new form...

I just went from an 600CC bike to a 1100CC bike. My insurance skyrocketed. An additional $5 a month.

I was quoted 46 a month for the 696... 105 a month for the HM...

Zero paperwork.  The dealer is a friend I've known for over 20 years.

Still not a fan of the new Monster direction.  Some will like it though.  IMHO, the newer bike calls out to younger, trendier riders (I like the position on the 696, actually).  While the S2R versions are elegant descendants of the original Monsters.

At the price they are now asking for the 1100 Monster, I certainly am glad to have a 2008.  10K out the door is quite a bit of difference to the 14 or 15K the 1100 will sell for.  I can only hope that the 1100 motor detailing is better than the 992cc motor in the S2r, which looks to have been cast with a foundry trowel.
