696 running hot

Alright, so, i've posted in the tech section... but i don't know that a lot of 696ers have made it over there yet... and i'm looking for more anecdotal information from this thread.

When i got my 696 it was running pretty consistently in the four bars range (sometimes up to 5, sometimes down to 3) I had the dealer check for the Coil issue, they said i didn't have it, but it felt like they were brushing me off... I confirmed for myself (assuming the information in the thread on the topic is correct).  I do not have the coil issue.

When i had the 600 mile service done, i asked them to check the warm running temp.  They ran it through a heat cycle, noticed nothing abnormal.

I'm nearly at 2k miles now, and am now running more in the 5 bar range (dipping to 4 sometimes, sometimes up to 6).  I'm running a little more aggressively now, being that i'm through break in (to the point where 8k rpm is clean).

Anyone else seeing these types of temperatures?

for reference:

one bar is the bottom, so anything up to 80C (176F)
two = 81-110C (177.8-230F)
three= 111-135C (231-275F)
Four= 136-160C (276-320F)
Five= 161-175C (321-347F)
Six= 176-190C (348-374)
Seven= 191-200C (375-392F)
Flashing Danger Full bars (seven flashing)= >201C  (>393F)

are you sure about your temps there?  on previous models 320°F was max and resulted in the temp gauge flashing 'hot' i couldn't imagine ducati giving the 696 an extra 73°F

Sorry, the one in the Tech thread was aimed at finding out if there's a technical issue here... this one was aimed at finding out if anyone else with a 696 is hitting these temps.

Coil issue threads abide on the general forum, so i didn't think this would be a problem.

It depends on how your riding....After fixing my coil issue, I still hit 5 bars in town in stop and go on a hot day...Sitting at a light, on an air cooled bike, it's not abnormal for it to get up there in temp....How does it run on the express way?

Last night, on the ride to the GF's -  ambient temp upper 70's, freeway all the way (15 miles) circa 90mph (6th gear 6-7k rpm) = 4 bars

This morning back to work- ambient 69F (according to the bike's thermometer), same drive in reverse, keeping it in the 60-70 mph range (6th gear ~5k rpm) = 4 bars.  Took slightly longer to get there.

I don't know if I would call that running hot...as I think any sustained riding usually yields four bars for me...I've never worried until I hit six bar...should I be worried?

That's what i'm wondering, and why i posted. (seems to me that's the middle of our gauge, so should be fine.  But i guarantee, if i went all the way home, which has another five miles of highway and  10-15 minutes (four miles) of street riding, i'd hit 5 bars... and i move pretty well through it.

I had my 696 out for about 30 miles at 80 mph w/ ambient temps in the upper 70's. It actually maxed the temp guage. I pulled over for 15 minutes and rode it home w/o further incident. This is the only time this happened to me; it normally runs in the 4 bar range like yours.

I think it's time that Ducati put out the oil cooler kit.

Seems to me that the M1100 comes with an oil cooler... may be compatible?  I'm definitely in the market for one.

I'm keen to see if the swingarm is swappable as well.  It'd be cool to pick one up from a (tragically) totaled M1100 and throw it on my bike.  a SSS696 would be sweet!

Runs the same temp as mine. I believe this is normal for an air cooled bike. I've owned two other bikes and they were both liquid cooled.

I rode up to Yosemite last week and the temp went to 7 and 8 bars and stayed there no mater what gear I used and even when the hills leveled out until i stopped and rested. maybe its my fat ass, maybe it needs an oil cooler for the long rides.

I just turned 1k miles on mine yesterday, during a 170mi road trip, all express way.  It stayed at 3 bars the entire time, with the exception of a couple times I was gettin happy on it, and it got to 4 bars.  It has been known to hit 5 bars sitting in horrible traffic, but never more than that.  Mine does not have the coil issue.

Raux

you guys running more than 4 or 5 bars, that just doesn't sound right. the only time in 1000 miles mine ever did more than 4 or 5 was when the coil was reversed. And the only time it came close to overheating (near max) was on the long trip to the dealer. i was told the misfire happens about 4000-4500 rpm which is about 70mph in 6th with the 15t sprocket. It was changed at 600 miles. after that never hit that high.

My '07 695 ran very hot in stop-and-go L.A. traffic, sometimes hitting 320 degrees. After I installed the Termi kit with DP ECU and open airbox, temps dropped 30 to 40 degrees.
