Sorta... just a different size. I do believe the quality was better... but Sony was really stupid with how they marketed and sold the machines.

I was watching some documentary on Discovery on Betamax vs VHS.  They say that one reason why the VHS won over Betamax is because the porn industry was "standardizing" to VHS.
