About ready to  do my first oil change ( bikes second, M 696) and was wondering what's the difference between the oil screen and filter. Is the screen for filtering larger foreign matter? And do I need to check/clean the screen every oil change? Thanks for any info and advise, as always. cheers

The screen filters out large chunks, protecting the oil pump, from the pump the oil goes to the oil filter.

Visually inspect it and you should be good.
