Groundhog Day..... Fifty First Dates...... what ever you wanna call it, I'm reliving the same shitty conversation............


Marquess just called me.  Conversation went like this:

Marquess: Hey Tom, I just called AMS to check on the bike and they said they never received it....what's up?

Tommy: Are you make the beast with two backsing kidding me?  You don't remember talking to me 2 days ago about your bike? 

Marquess: No??

Tommy: Marquess, dude.....your bike is fu*ked..... and so is my trailer and my Montero.  I called and talked to you about it while the officer was here and you gave me your insurance info for the officer's report.

Marquess:  Wow...that's not good.  You know, I have been having really bad headaches.

Tommy: Dude, you don't remember the helicopter ride, you don't remember the hospital, you don't remember who drove you home from the hospital and you don't remember me calling you Thursday morning and having a conversation with you and the officer about the 2nd accident (5 days after he hit his head).  Dude, you need to go straight to the emergency room and demand a MRI!! That's make the beast with two backsed up!  You have some serious head issues.  Blah blah blah you get the idea.......

It sounds like a trip to a neurologist is needed. My bet would be that a PCP would make a referral for this.

Well, after walking up to him after he wrecked, he hadn't moved a muscle since he went down. Dan and I turned him over so he could get some air. When I looked at him he was out cold. I took off his helmet (may have been a mistake) and he started to come around a little after a few minutes. I kept tapping his face and lifting the back of his head up so as to allow him to swallow. He was bleeding a little from his mouth. The face shield of his helmet was gone. The one thing I do remember is that as he was tumbling like a hotdog on a slanted grill his head was going every which a way. There is no doubt that he has cebral hemoraging. I'm just afraid that if his brain starts bleeding he's a goner. T, did you call him back? Get his friends number too. You need someone rational to talk to.

His friend is on his way there, and he is going in to the hospital tonight before his friend goes to work.  (if he remembers)

I sure hope he goes!!  Being knocked out should have been relayed from EMS to Care Flight then to Trauma ER at JPS - a head CT takes 10mins or less - it should have been done as soon as he arrived.

Y'know, I've been looking at/studying helmets of late - not sure that my $500 unit is necessarily the safest one available.  Out of curiosity (driven by self-preservation), I have two questions:

1) What kind of helmet was this young man wearing when he fell? and
2) Is it possible that his helmet could have "failed" (that is, transmitted some of the impact to his brain)?

I'm not asking to be morose or anything like that.  It sounds like he has a concussion... or maybe worse.  So it's kinda scary to think that one could take a non-impact crash, wearing a helmet, and sustain damages like that.

I appreciate any light anyone can shed.  Thanks.

He has 3 Suomy's, I cant recall if they are the Spec 1R or Extreme.

I wasn't there, but a helmet is a preventative measure, not the be all end all of safety.  After a helmet takes one hit, its compromised and finished.  You can still scramble your brain and/or kill yourself with a helmet on.  It just lessens the damage.  Look at it this way, had he not had the helmet on, he'd be dead most likely.  At least he's alive and 'hopefully' in salvagable shape once the doctors take a look at him.  The helmet accomplished its goal.  Its doubtful another brand would have done anything different for him.

If the forces are there, you are going to sustain injury or damage regardless of what you are wearing.  It just helps mitigate things.  I wouldn't lose faith in your nice helmet.
