broken kickstand mount

bike went down yesterday and sheared the kickstand boss off the case. is there a common way to repair these, or do other accommodations need to be made? i was thinking of drilling and tapping a longer bolt into the case a bit, but i dont know the thickness of it at that point. stupid ducati engineering.

seems like a tricky spot, on top of aluminum being tricky as well. thats good to hear.

Aluminum is only tricky for the unskilled. ;)

Not being able to see the damage...it may be that the engine needs to be removed, or even the cases split. Not a fun thought, but it can be repaired.

My recommendation is to get it welded, then threaded and a Time-Sert installed.
I've done that a time or two.

If you drill even a *little* deeper, you'll break through into the sump.
So measure the existing drilled depth carefully.

Granted, the OEM setup isn't the best way to attach a kickstand, but it's what you've got.  :-\

Pics are best -- easier to give a solution.

Options are:

1) if just the threads stripped, then oversize drillbit and use a thread insert to fix the case. (sometimes oversize from metric to standard is enough also)
2) TIG weld it up after doing a bunch of clean, clean and more cleaning. It welds easily enough when clean -- but sometimes getting access is difficult at best.  In the past I have added a support on the upper bolt ia a small piece of aluminum to bridge from it to the lower sprocket casting area to reinforce.
3) worse case scenario -- make a plate that you bolt the kickstand to and that plate bolts to the engine via different holes.

well it's sheared flush to the case, so it doesn't sound like longer bolt will be an option. Guess a trip to the local welder is in order.

Post up where in the world you are.  Someone on here knows a good welder and likely can point you in the right direction.

you could just leave the kickstand off and lay the bike on its side when parked, a la like we used to do with our BMXers when we was kids...(my BMX bike was a Huffy with all the extra stuff taken off, i fancied me self a customizer!)

im in sf. i know a pretty competent welder, just need him to take a look
