Quick question for the technical experts in the forum.  Wlll a motor from a 2001 900SS fit a 2000 M900Sie frame?  I've been looking for a new engine (Los Angeles area, if you have one) and just want to be sure I don't buy the wrong one.

Also, does anybody know what range of years for 900 blocks will fit?  Thanks!

Norm

All the 900 motors will fit all other frames, it's just a question of bracketry between carbs and FI.

nomadwarmachine

Thanks, Norm.  I assume that I need a FI motor, though, or can I slap any motor into the frame and connect the FI (which I retained from my blown motor)?

2000 - 2002 M900's are the same as what you have and are also FI. All parts will fit as they are the same. One note, the exhaust mount is different for the 2002 M900 how it bolts to the head. <-- I believe only the 2002 M900 had this different mount.

1999-2003 900 SS's should all be the same too. They started FI on these in 1999.

Earlier 900 engine bikes will have some slight differences.

Most obvious are

Single phase / three phase electrics.
Internal or External oil lines going to the heads.
Engine bolt size, old is 10mm new (current) is 12mm.

That 2001 SS engine should be a perfect fit and is already FI and the least amount of work.

Don't forget the odd ball 900's like in the cagiva grand canyon and the e-900.
these motors had no bearings in the cases for the swingarm just like 916 cases.

good for projects though ;)

If I remember correctly, 2001 is the first year of the 12mm. bolts

Yep, you're right Howie. I should have been more clear about that in my original response. But what he's planning on doing is the easier way as he only has to enlarge the holes slightly in the frame. Besides the larger engine bolts are an improvement.

nomadwarmachine

So do I have to bore out the holes in the frame to accomodate the enlarged 12mm bolt holes?  Is that all I will need to do?

Also, are the headers the same on the 2001 900SS engine as the 2000M900?  I would assume there is no difference between the motors, but thought I would ask, since we are no the subject!

Yes you'd have to bore out the holes in the frame

No the headers are different between Monsters and SS's. You could make them work, but not without a cutoff saw, a welder, some 1 1/2" OD tubing and some creativity.  If I remember correctly the rear pipe that goes from the head to the 4 way junction is different because of the difference in swingarms.

Eric,
I totally forgot about the old GC's and E900's! Those were some sweet bikes

nomadwarmachine

2001Cromo, could I just use the headers off of the Monster (which I still have)?  What I am really asking is whether the orientation of the engine (location of exhaust studs) is the same.

2001cromo

Yes, use the SS engine, enlarge the holes in the frame a tiny bit and use the Monster headers which will bolt into the SS engine just fine. Everything will be plug and play...

Are you doing this yourself?

Indeed, I am.  Everything off of my bike is in perfect condition.  I just have a dead motor.  I will either go with the 2001 900SS motor, or if I can find a set of 900 cylinders, I may use a motor from another DML'r here.

Exactly what are you trying to do? Or what exactly happened to your engine?

Check you PM's

Well, looks like I got sniped at the last minute on the 900SS motor.  Any leads on a 2000-2001 900 motor appreciated!
