So I took off my passenger pegs last night to see how it looks without em.  I think you know the rest of the story already.

Who knew that the heel guards on the exhaust themselves and the rear set actually don't touch your heel when riding on your toes?  The exhaust sure felt like the perfect spot to lean against.

Thankfully I only did it for, oh, 10 minutes before I had stopped and noticed.  Now I gotta somehow clean the gunk off the exhaust (any tips on how to do this?).  Boots lost some mass, but not enough to warrant new boots.  I can probably replace the heel guard on the boot itself, if I can somehow rip the old one off that has fused to the boot itself.

What sort of solutions do you guys use to prevent this?  Suck it up and put the passenger pegs back on?  Some sort of aftermarket heel guard to put on the exhaust?  Heat wrap around it?

Used a butane torch to burn off the boot shit off the exhaust.  Doesn't look perfect, but also doesnt look like a big gob of shit on my exhaust

Exhaust wrap. You can get a 2" x 15' roll for around $15-20. Easy to install, gives that racy hot rod kinda look, and most importantly.....keeps from melting yer boots!

Only problem I forsee with exhaust wrap is that I need to be able to remove the lower exhaust clipon for wheel removal.  Also, the seemingly useless heel guards already on the exhaust are attacked to a bracket, which may make wrapping around it tough

When I put on my full Zard exhaust I too discovered the joys of boot melting, BUT even after I did another mod I had lined up, fully wrapping my exhaust, I actually still had an issue with the boot melting right onto the wrap.  I was surprised at how hot it was getting even after the wrap.  That said, I decided to take a different approach and made a monster-ish mod to my boot instead of the bike. I rather enjoy the frankenboot look.

Yeah, I was surprised, but the wrap job was fun. I pretty much did it per most recommendations for spacing and also sprayed on the high temp black paint. It was definitely less hot, but still enough to melt over a long ride.

Try oven cleaner on your exhaust.  Just follow the directions (no huffing, now!).  You might want to cover rubber, paint, etc., just exposing what you want clean.   It works really good.
While we're in the kitchen, try Pam non-stick on the bottom of your motor in the winter.  Road gloop wipes off really easy.

check with sr. moore about exhaust and shoes/boots/pants ... he has some burning issues with this too.

I've heard that white boots don't burn.
