We just finished coring the stock 696 exhaust cans... It will probably not be a home job unless you have a ban saw and a mig or tig welder.  We removed the outer aluminum cover and dissected the cans into 3 pieces.  The catalytic converter is in the first part of the can and then there is a two chamber piece   that contains three pipes with the center pipe being the final exhaust outlet.  It is a bit different than coring the S2R or 695 pipes. You must cut this pipe to gain access to anything.  We ended up completely removing the baffle, but left the small exhaust outlet to keep some back pressure.  It sounds drastically different! A bit louder and much more throaty! I am getting a third set of stock exhaust this week and I am going to perfect a medium level coring.  I will post some pics of the procedure and also the sound file so you can hear the difference. I am also having the aluminum skins anodized black and I will pick those up Thurs.

IMHO, if I were going to go to the trouble of cutting the cans I want the end product to be a can with a whole the size of the exhaust pipes going straight through the can.

You could do that, but you have to find a way to maintain back pressure. You could weld a washer in the middle of the pipe so that you could not see it.  Then you could get away with a larger outlet.

none of the aftermarket pipes have the backpressure issue?

Well, if you do remove back pressure, you might have to re tune the bike.  Although with a lambda sensor, the computer should be able to compensate a little bit.  I may try to do a bigger straight pipes and outlet and see what the exhaust color and plugs look like after a short time.
