I have noticed on hard acceleration my chain is either slipping or my sprocket is jumping a notch it seems. It is a sort of jolt when it does it. I just noticed this last night. Has anyone had this problem? If it's time for a new chain is there a particular brand or type I should replace it with? How long does it take to change out?

I ask because my surgery date is Tuesday 27th and I'd like to ride the Sunday ride this week. Last ride for me for at least 6-8 weeks. Heck, in fact I may not even be able to type! Stop cheering and laughing those who are.

How much play in your chain?

To answer you question CJ, I  haven't looked at the chain to see if there was any play. I just parked it last night and thought I'd address the problem this afternoon. I'll let you know.

Any idea how many miles are on the chain/sprocket set?

Any teeth on the sprockets missing?  chain have seized links?

check the front/rear sprocket alignment.

not sure if your bike has a retaining bar on the front sprocket, but it may have loosened and is letting the sprocket walk on the counter-shaft.

Of course check your chain tension.

Check out Chris Kelley at ca-cycleworks.com for info on chains/sprocket set ups.  It's a simple swap if you have a chain cutter/press. 

DID is pretty much the gold standard...but i've heard good things about EK, too.  chris kelly sells everything you'll need, including the RK chain tool (great quality).

Bryant, I was thinking that the loosening part may have played a big part here because I'm sure I ride the bike much harder than the guy before who owned it. I downshift coming into corners at high revs sometimes which in turn will lock up the rear wheel to a degree. I thought that if the chain hadn't been tightened or is getting stretched it may have caused this problem. Just the same I'll have a look at all the things you mentioned and hopefully have some feedback tonight.

Then again it may be about time to follow RonR's    lead and get into a new 1198s! hmmm...

ok, the chain is definately loose. there seems to be more play than the 32-34mm. also the rear sproket looks like the teeth are kinda flat. i will need to see one up close to compare.

Front sprocket?

Flat looking teeth are not good. How many miles does the ST have on it? Could be time for new stuff all around.

Well, that's the deal there. looks like eveything for around 3-350$w/sprocket cover. thanks mucho man.

The bike has over 20k on it so it's time for the new mods. Bike has always been maintenanced at EuroSport Cycle which I have records and to my knowledge the chain has never been changed. This will give me something to do while away from riding this spring. Thanks all.

The problem is, of course, you need a new chain & 2 new sprockets...
