I'm kind of nervous to cut up my airbox on my 02 620.  The top looks like there is a lot of molding and I'm just curious as to how much plastic I should cut out.  Plan on doing a K&N filter filter as well if that means anything.  If anyone could post pics of their modded airbox it would be greatly appreciated!  Cheers!

I'm also interested in this and have heard of partially opening (like just removing the snorkel) and fully opening (like the DP airbox top.) Are the sound and airflow gains comparable? Got a spare ready and waiting to go under the knife!

I`ll try to get a pic today. My gas tank is off so it is a good time to take a pic for you. Basically just cut the whole top off and leave the sides of the top cover.It sounds great when you open up the throttle. Like it is going to suck you in.

It's pretty much up to you how open you want it.  The thing I didn't like about having an almost completely open airbox was that the intake sound was directed right up into my face.  Also keep in mind that this mod will lean out the A/F mixture a bit, and without the DP ECU there is not much wiggle room to richen it up.  I ended up going with pod filters after having it open for a while, but that mod opens up a whole other can of worms.

So Does a partially-open lid give you the flow increase without the sound coming straight up?

You will definitely hear intake noise especially in the upper rpm range. I personally like all the mechanical sounds my bike makes. My clutch is open too. 


P.S.   I have 2 Alfa 164's 

Mine looks like the pic. I had it done when I got it serviced and it was re dyno`d. It was running lean to begin with. I love it.

yeah, lots of people love the open airbox sound.  I love my bike loud too, don't get me wrong.  It was just a bit too in-your-face for me.

if you think its loud with the open airbox, dont do pods.  the cut box is nothing compared to doing pod filters.  im running pods and my exhaust is just the headers and going down the highway at 80 i can hear the intake over the exhaust.

Pods are definitely louder, but more balanced IMHO.  Much more of a snarl than an open roar, and not going right back up into your face.  Problem with pods is that you lose the crankcase recapture to the vent tank and airbox.  Not that big of a deal unless you like to do long high wheelies, in which case the filter you now need can spill oil out the back and possibly onto your rear tire...    

also- be aware that opening up the intake will almost certainly require jetting/tuning changes to compensate for the extra air...

i did mine different than most people for that though.  i took the hose where it went into the stock airbox and put a small filter right up there on the end of it.  the hoses run into the same exact place they used to but now it ends with the filter.
