It's clear I don't know about this stuff, but I'm trying to figure out what the advantage of coffin reservoirs could be. The only thing that occurs to me is that they must be cheaper. I just can't figure out why they'd be cheaper. As far as I can tell, "regular" round reservoirs with screw-on tops are less prone to corrosion and leakage, and they appear to have fewer parts.

So what am I missing? Why are coffins cheaper than round reservoirs?

Because they're old technology.

A one piece casting is likely cheaper to buy than a casting, the reservoir, and the hoses and clamps.

Add assembly costs and you've saved 3 lire.

Ah. So the savings aren't in the reservoir itself but in the couple of extra piddling parts to hold it on and connect it...

I'm trying really hard not to modify my bike beyond the little I've done. I can see a slippery slope all the way from here to bankruptcy!

The coffins don't bother me. Much. I just wondered if there were any reason for their continued use other than cheapness.

They're really hard to break in a crash.   

None I know of.

They get rid of the tupperware

I have to say, I think the coffins are much better looking than plastic cups.  I've wondered why you can't get higher-end levers with integrated reservoirs.

ISR are made in Sweden, I think there is a dealer in the US, but be warned they are not cheap.

Some of those look like they have tiny reservoirs, better to have big cups.  not for looks but for performance, and to top it off http://www.yoyodyneti.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=X98.A7.C1

screw the plastic cups, get the rizoma cups, that's what I did. And you can get pazzo levers which are pretty damn nice with my FHE with them and they make them to fit the older large pivot pumps. mu remote rez and coffin pumps, take the same levers.
